crash at Buchanan Field, Concord
Debrief, share, and hopefully learn from the mistakes of others.
A light twin crashed at Buchanan field today. I was working at the Tesoro Refinery about a mile away. Havean't heard any official report...just that they overshot the landing and crashed into the birm of the freeway. When I was driving home the eastbound lanes were closed and debris scattered in the area. Two souls were lost upon impact, two others airlifted out...but did not survive. They crashed within 100 yards of the medi-vac ramp.

It was a Piper Malibu Mirage PA 46-350P single engine. All four people on the plane died. The pilot had apparently missed the first approach to 19R. The weather didn't look awful: 2 1/2SM -RA BR BKN029 OVC034. But flying into Concord can be a little tricky.
Very sad. The naysayers were already on the radio this morning arguing that KCCR should be shut down.

Buchanan's been on the chopping block before, too, and recently. But I think it was fought for and we won out. That's prime real estate in the middle of Contra Costa county, and the developers are drooling over it. Sad.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
