Very interesting video. How hard is it to keep the pitch level when the C.G. is moving around like that?

Re: Day In The Life... USAF

Considering it's a C17 it's probably just on autopilot :P

Re: Day In The Life... USAF

This is what we call a "heavy equipment" drop and it happens pretty quick so no significant CG change. A parachute yanks it out.

Containter Delivery System (https://youtu.be/WOx5x1P6W00) does have a more pronounced CG shift... but all in a day's work!

Re: Day In The Life... USAF

The biggest CG issue I encountered was a 155 howitzer around 24000lbs. It used a single 28ft extraction chute. Bigger loads than that used multiple extraction chutes to keep the exit time short. Dropped a 37000lb dump truck, no big deal.

No doubt about it, our military guys and gals do some amazing things. Kudos to them, and thanks to all who serve or have served.

Re: Day In The Life... USAF

I shot a few 250 pound missiles off the jet while flying Mach 1.2. They ejected, fired and were gone in less than 1 second. No shift in CG felt. I did have a Ragin H____n though

Lower tech airdrop....We did hundreds of these for the UN and Red Cross back in the day. 20,000 lbs per drop, 1/2 the 40,000 lb load per pass.

The only downside of the airdrops? Missing out on the "backcountry" landings we did at some of the other villages.
