Deadliest Job Interview - Bush Pilot

OMFG it hurts.... CC is back - and this time he got a gig as a "reality" tv star - the best bush pilot in the world!

Maybe I should fly over to South Africa and get "certified" so I can make $500/hr in Texas?

Ridiculous!

Should this be considered good or bad exposure for back-country aviation?

Re: Deadliest Job Interview - Bush Pilot

I was wondering how this would be received  I don't know much history about CC, but I do know some from a friend that spent some time with him, and I should just leave it at that :-#

My brother in law and a couple friends asked me if I watched it. I told them I did for about 10 min then I turned it off. Anytime the facts are stretched and drama is inserted, you have misinformation spread. Even if it is for entertainment, I believe it is a disservice to the culture/industry.

After your people see this fallacy, you, (as someone informed and educated on the facts) are then left explaining to the mis-informed what, where, and why, what is portrayed on the TeeVee is bullshit. I always end up feeling like I am some sort of asshole expert, and am left explaining and defending the facts. Not as some sort of ego boost, but just because I can't stand bullshit.

Ever seen Ax Men on the history channel? They have done well at making the logging industry look like a bunch of childish jackasses. All in the name of viewership and ratings. I can't believe the loggers in the series will "act" that way just because its scripted for them to do so. I guess they are making better money as actors than loggers. As someone who worked for over 15 years in the industry, I refuse to watch it.

Many of the American sheeple will buy damn near anything just cause it on the tube.

This whole genre of TV is just the worst. It's designed to make anything but sitting on the couch look horrible and scary, so their viewers can can feel better about themselves for vegging out in front of the TV.

Re: Deadliest Job Interview - Bush Pilot

Fantastic beyond any imaginable hyperbole.

Dirt strip take off!

Wicked death-defying SPINS!!

Incompetent trainee!!!

Sun ravaged face and neat accent!!!!

TV at its finest... It's not his fault for making it, it's the viewers fault for watching it. Anyone who doesn't understand that TV is only about entertainment and has nothing to do with real life is hopefully still in grade school.

On the other hand, if the guy is actually making money with a 172 then he's got one up on everyone else I've ever met in aviation.

I've already ordered my shirt for maximum bush flying authenticity:

I've never met CC, but I have to think he's hamming it up for the producers, or else he knows this character he's developed is what he's selling. I'll reserve judgement until I meet him.

Reality TV on the other hand, is a scourge. Documentary TV has all but been ruined by it. There are a few decent shows, but I find it depressing that the Discovery Channel and NatGeo and the History Channel, all of which had great programming at one time, are dominated by this format. It must sell well to advertisers. Maybe I could learn something from them??? 8)

Stick a camera on Burson, and make a reality show about him interacting with Lizard Lee and the other desert dwellers. Gotta be better TV than Honey Boo-Boo.

Re: Deadliest Job Interview - Bush Pilot

From the page talking about the show

This six episode series follows arborists climbing 200 feet high in the Redwood Forest, acrobatic bush pilots in the savanna of South Africa, extreme heavy haul truckers through

what in the actual fudge is that?

smh

seen a few decent flying shows.. I mean they all absolutely run with the littlest thing to make drama, but I have enjoyed 1-2 over the years... this one looks really really overdone..

reminds me of dangerous flights.. I really wanted to like that show, some of the stuff they did ferrying planes to other countries was pretty crazy... but the way it was blown up into something so dramatic: "they are running later than expected, and now, they are going to have to fly this cirrus sr22 for an hour, AT NIGHT!!!!"

ugghhh

Re: Deadliest Job Interview - Bush Pilot

I say, all the power to him. So what, he’s found a way to make a reasonable living from his passion. He’s kind’a the Steve Irwin of aviation; I bet that marine biologists climbed up Irwin’s ass with plenty of negative attitude. Personally, I can’t watch much of that kinda sensational crap, but face it, Joe public has the attention span of a gnat with dementia. If planes and pilots aren’t on the edge of crashing and dying, no one’s going to watch, and in this game, like any other, it’s a business. You gotta have the viewers tuning in every week if your gonna make a buck. Pilots are an extremely small demographic. If they produced shows exclusive to our liking, they would be broke by the first episode.

Re: Deadliest Job Interview - Bush Pilot

Come on guys, it's "reality" TV, you got to be born yesterday to think it has anything to do with reality, heck half the time the actual TV "news" isn't that much better, you all know this :)

As for CC, if I found myself in S Africa and had the money and time I'd take his course, seems to probably be one of the better 172 drivers I've seen, and from what I've read he appears to be a good host too.

If I recall the last time the CC Poppycock thread came around we tried to find a mole to go take the course and report back with the real scoop! Let us know if you go. we're all curious (whether we admitt to watching the reality show or not  ).

Re: Deadliest Job Interview - Bush Pilot

I couldn't help but have a chuckle.

Although I have not met CC before, he is infamous here in South Africa. He has had a few issues and run ins with the authorities, changing the registration of his plane to bypass rules and regs. At one stage he had it registered in Swaziland - not exactly what you would call an aviation leading country - so that he could essentially do as he pleased. I see now that he has it N registered. I am really not sure how he gets around giving instruction except to you american guys. It wouldn't be allowed here in SA. I do know that the flying magazines here from time to time run an article on his course but they tend to use their own aircraft and its not considered "instruction" since the "student' is the only one who flies with CC delivering "advice" from the right seat. After searching through the forum, and watching the video clips, it does make him look like a maverick for lack of a better word.

At one stage when he couldnt fly (authorities) he did all the pyro shows at the airshows here in SA. Even that got him in trouble. Never great when you set airfields on fire...

As a new Maule owner, I considered doing the course for education but judging by the feedback here, maybe I will just settle on his book instead and do a Back country course with you guys in the States.

Last year I met one of the "stars" of Ax Men, Gabe Rygaard, when his outfit was logging the piece of property next door to me. I asked him about it, he rolled his eyes and said the drame was all a buncha bullshit but the money sure was good. Seeing how hard it is to make a buck logging these days, due to the tree-huggers and resulting lack of available publicly owned timber among other things, you can't blame him.

Does anyone remember the Flying Wild Alaska reality series, aka "The Ariel Show"? Cute girl, and a hard-working aviation family, but what a buncha bullshit. I remember watching one episode where Dad was flying up to some mining camp to fly everyone out for the winter-- last minute flight, big emergency, and he can't find the camp. Really? In this day when everyone has GPS (even cellphones) and your lat/long are just a push of a button away? Another scene (inside an airplane) had Ariel getting ready to land for the very first time....a shot of the panel showed the mixture pulled out and the airspeed & tach both on zero. Really?

As long as people are dumb enough to watch this crap, somebody is gonna be smart enough to accommodate them- and get paid very well for doing so.
