Hey Tim, do some searching on here, because I believe somebody was talking last year...maybe in the "Landing on Roads" thread about some highway patrol or sheriffs out near Denio or Fields or somewhere that were giving planes a hard time.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

There is a strip behind the store and motel and you can taxi to the pumps with minimal time on the road.

You shouldn't have any trouble getting to the pumps. The owners are great folks and are friendly to pilots.

DENIO

I have flown over Denio a number of times going from the Black Rock to the Alvord Hot Springs. Looks to be two runways, both dirt/gravel. Never landed there as I burn 100 avgas. Having said that, I am glad it is there as it's the only airport for many miles in any direction.

The truth will set you on the path to being free

I was there a little over a month ago.

Don't know how you would get to any pumps, to many trailers and trash in the way.

I spent a couple hours filling in holes that would swallow a five gallon can very easy.

The bar was open, the locals couldn't get the gas pump to even work the day I was there.

Not on my top ten list.

There is actually three runways. The two normal gravel runways and the other paved one that looks like a highway that is used during the winter. The Nevada Dept. of Trans even keep it plowed... ;-)

Last spring I was planning on getting over there, but never made it. However, in my planning, I found that a fellow from the Dept. of Transportation is the one that goes up and grades the runway. I spoke with him and he gave me the latest conditions of the field. If I can find his name and number, I'll post it. I think I started my search with airnav.

I'm sorry to hear that things have detoriorated. I first experienced this place when fighting fires. We set up our helitack spot on the strip and overnighted there. We had some great breakfasts in the resturant there. I remember seeing a supercub come in and park in the parking lot. I thought that was one of the coolest things I had ever seen. But that was 10+ years ago and I know that it has changed oweners since then.

Actually I was kidding about the 3rd runway and it being paved. 10 years or so ago I used to fly in there during the winter and just land on the highway. Dept of Trans usually had it plowed and the real runways were covered for most of the winter.

No, I think you misunderstood. Apparantly there really is a guy that grades the dirt/gravel runways and he works for the state. I spoke with him and he gave the update on the runway condition. He had just been up and and graded the runway. I'll try to find his name and contact number for those of you wanting to give it a try.

Driving up that way tonight through Saturday. I'll try to find out what it looks like and give you a report.

Your right, I did mistake grading for plowing. The operational status of Denio Junction probably hasn't changed much then as they were grading during the summer back then also. It sounds like the store / cafe / postoffice / motel has gone downhill though. Too bad, cool little spot. They had some pictures of some of the biggest Mule Deer I had ever seen on the poster board in the cafe.

Yeah I remember seeing those pictures that they had hung up. Being a hunter, I was impressed with some of the bucks they were pulling out of that area.

I had heard that it has gone down hill. It really is a shame.

N18NV, I'm looking forward to an update. Thanks

Just got back to Reno from Denio last night. They said the strip was in good shape but no rooms for the next few weeks due to the start of hunting season.

The girl (cook, bartender, and bottle washer) said to call first and they would give you an airport update and let you know about the room situation.

Right, she gave me a, its perfect report, I filled in most of the holes that would leave a non bushwheel plane a runway marker.

jmtgt might be getting it taken care of for all you future visitors. If he does, anybody that lands with no problems has to send him a 12 pack :D

If it were not for the dildoes with the four wheelers that strip would stay in better shape.
