Detective needed: Help

Okay, it is not as exciting as the title but:

I would like to find a copy of Ontario Provincial Air Service's Drawing 1501. That drawing is referenced in the FAA's TCSD for the DHC-2 under item 206 "Lumber and equipment installation" for carrying lumber as an external load. Since it is in the TCSD, as I read the rules the plane would not have to be operated under Restricted Category for external loads. I have called Onatario Dept of Natural resources aviation branch which is the successor or OPAS, and Kenmore both to no avail. Google and Bing come up with nothing.

a free donut to the person that helps me find the drawings.

Rules for external loads have changed so many times in the past depending on who was the new FSDO guy. Just wondering what the difference is between restricted and unrestricted now for external loads.

Re: Detective needed: Help

You can operate the DHC 2 Beaver with external loads under FAR Part 135 operations, IF you comply with the TCDS requirements, specifically, you can carry only the external loads specified, and this must be done using the deHavilland attach gear specified in the TCDS for the airplane.

deHavilland provided attach gear for canoes, kayaks and lumber, at least. There may have been others.

The Beaver I flew had the original attach gear for lumber, which was pretty simple.

I've seen the kayak racks, and they're more complex.

I'd think if you could find the drawings you could fabricate the attach gear, but approvals?? Gonna depend on the FSDO.

BUT, if you have the original attach gear, it's NOT required to go in the restricted category for external loads, and I doubt the FAA can tell you no, since its approved by the manufacturer (and flight tested) with external loads.

I'd call Viking Air the current holder of the TCDS and ask about attach gear.

Re: Detective needed: Help

Kenmore has some canoe racks we made per the original drawings which are for sale I believe.

I remember looking for that flight supplement not too long ago in the vast Kenmore archives and finding it. It was mostly concerned with the proper cleaning of the canvas straps which hold the load in place. I'm out of the office for a few days now, I'll try to find it this weekend when I'm back in there.

If we're getting specific here I believe the only items approved were lumber and canoes, not kayaks. Both mounts can be found in the more complete parts books.

HOOTP,

I have seen a set of drawings for hauling fence posts on the wing hard points outboard of the wing struts of the DHC-II. Not really what you are looking for but still worth at least a donut hole!

Re: Detective needed: Help

Halestorm, any help would be appreciated.

MTV - the drawings is part of the TCDS and therefore I could fly lumber under my 135, hence the search. I tried Viking but haven't got a response. It has to be out in the world somewhere.

I am surprised that the FAA doesn't seem to have it since it is mentioned specifically in the TCDS.

Re: Detective needed: Help

Ok, Kenmore does have Drawing# 1561: Universal Lumber and Canoe Carrier (Beaver) dated 1951, as well as the installation instructions for the Ontario Provincial Air Service Universal Carrier.

You'll have to call again to see what it'll take to get your hands on a copy, I don't have the authority to post it here unfortunately. I'll let the folks in the MAINTENANCE office know where the drawings are hidden (I found them in the file cabinet under "Canoe rack", go figure) and I'm sure they'll be delighted to help you.

Also, I'm 99% sure we have some of those universal carriers in stock.

Good luck

Re: Detective needed: Help

Wow! thanks a bunch I will call on Monday, can you give me a name to ask for? PM would be cool. I visit my brother in Seattle twice a year or so, so you can tell me what kind of donut you like, and I will meet you somewhere to pay up.

Thanks,
Wes
