dirty ball cap

I may be the exception, but I've got several ball caps I wear when flying and some of them are pretty filthy from years of use. My wife refuses to let me out of the house with them if I'm headed anywhere but the airport. I tried washing one in the washing machine, but the bill got badly deformed and even I wouldn't wear it any more. Then my wife got me this thingamajig for Christmas that let's me wash my ball caps in the dishwasher. I tried it on my nastiest Maule cap and it came our pristine and the bill is still properly shaped. It was the best weird little gift I've received in ages:

Re: dirty ball cap

I have one--Mah Woman got it locally, I think at the Dollar Store. Never thought to use it in the dishwasher, but it works fine in the HE front loading clothes washer. One thing--amazing number of ball caps have non-colorfast decorative stuff, which will run and ruin the looks of the ball cap.

Hand wash.
Sink full of hot water and a scrub brush. Air dry.

In a lot of cases, the Cap itself is made with the same non-colorfast material. Depending on the soap used to clean the cap, it could fade or discolor as well.

What to do... try and clean the cap, wear it until it falls apart, or ditch it when it starts to smell bad? Hmmm... :?

EDIT: One of mine; 'the old warhorse'...

Re: dirty ball cap

Not much of a problem, I leave them where the dogs can get to them and they chew 'em to bits and then the bits are clean and I get a new hat #-o

Re: dirty ball cap

I had this little black bear approach me last summer so I threw my hat at him. He rolled, slobbered, and bit my hat for about five minutes while trying to get it on his head. Finely succeeded and I figured he must be a teenage boy as he wore it backwards. The hat was pretty yucky when he was done, so I decided to wash it.

Re: dirty ball cap

From the gist of most responses I guess I'm out of line trying to clean my hats. I'll be sure to add a bit of grime to whichever hat I wear at the next BCP function I attend. The clean hats will just be used to get a pass from the wife when I want to be out in public...

The bear picture was pretty amazing. I'd much rather have one of my hats go to the bears than my own skin! Maybe a skanky hat would be more interesting to a marauding black bear than a clean one. If so, that is a pretty good reason to leave the sweat and grime in place!

Just wait till its time to rebuild that 582... the dishwasher does a really good job on the cylinders and crank case. The clutches for my snogo clean up real nice in the dishwasher as well. My new wife was not real impressed when she saw me loading them in the dishwasher, but she wanted to ride more than bitch about the parts washer LOL.
