DIY: Awesome Windsock Pole Design

All you need is a welder, a wind sock, and some scrap metal!

I work in the gas and oil business for my day job. There are windsocks stationed at all "muster points" which are safe upwind locations on well pads. (Think gas leak and prevailing winds.)

I see a wind sock and immediately my mind goes to flying. (Of course)

I have been checking out the design of the poles on our well pads and I think it's a good one. Simple to build and maintain.

Unbolt the two bolts and just lower it down.

I figure you could just buy a weld-able HD hinge or just built your own.

Re: DIY: Awesome Windsock Pole Design

I made mine out of 2" well pipe, the pivot point is a 4' section of channel iron set in quickrete. The top is a hub from an old car axle that I welded a basketball hoop to. An 18" windsock fits almost perfectly, held on with zip-ties. I don't cut off the zip-tie ends, as it serves the keep the birds from landing on and leaving 'droppings' on it.
