do you think this performance upgrade was worth 15K?

I recently took a PA18a-150 in on trade. It flew real nice but lacked performance. People frequently ask questions like what does this that or the other do for performance so I decided to document the results. Not sure if it was worth 15K, but it did make a difference that is for sure.

1) absolutely

2) I'm a sucker for side-by-side comparisons, super cool!

I like this sort of thing. Everyone dreams about mods, so it's cool to see a bunch go on in 30 seconds. :)

Prop and bushwheels go a long way. Much cheaper than an engine upgrade.

I think the $15,000 was for the parts only.

What would it cost for an A&P to install those parts if one wanted to upgrade a Cub?

WOW. :) that is a cool video.

Guess I can now justify Ginormouse tires as well as a "Borer"prop.

Thanks for posting. =D>

Thanks learntolandshort! It's incredible what your mods did to your Cub. Most people, me included, believe that those changes in performance can be obtained mainly with more power. Your experiment shows that, although power is sometimes good (fuel flow considered), a considerable boost in performance can be achieved without necessarily investing in a bigger engine. Thanks for the lesson!

I'm not a Cub expert by any means, but there seemed to be some difference between the pilot techniques used.

I am by no means a Cub expert either, most of my time is in maules and Carbon Cubs almost all of my cub or husky time is from the back seat so there is certainly plenty to be desired in terms of the rotation/flap timing, but I did gently touch the tailwheel in both take offs (not on purpose) So I do think they were very similar and I certainly tried to make them that way. But yes I am sure someone out there could have done a better job with more cub time unquestionably.

No big deal, but pitch is measured in inches. This assumes that if the air were a solid (think jello) and there is no "slippage" of the prop as it rotates, it pulls itself forward through that medium with perfect efficiency. Of course, this doesn't happen in the real world, but this offers a means to compare props.

In the case of the prop you noted, it would pull itself forward 41 inches for each complete rotation in a perfect medium.

Are you sure it wasn't 41" advance or something? 41 degrees is a fair bit of coarse pitch?

Oops... I see MTV already answered that!

Well, I guess for completeness, a CS prop might vary between 17 degrees and 31 degrees measured at a certain station along the blade. But that varies with the station, and is that measurement to the chord, or the back surface, what if it's curved etc... which is why the 41" measurement is a simpler way of expressing it, because it's independant of the station.

Cool video.

Pretty sure he meant 41" pitch. The "82/41" Borer is pretty standard on a 150 cub. Just a typo...

yea I am an idiot. I am used to constant speed props and station settings for low pitch.

thanks for the explanation. Several customers have asked me what that number means and while I understand the concept I have trouble explaining it properly. I believe I will plagiarize going forward. :D
