Does Lyc make a reciprcating jetA Helicopter engine??

Was out in Challis the past few days while a wild horse gather was going on. The contractor had a couple helicopters with turbo lyc engines in them. The trucks they towed the trailers with had big fuel tanks on the back and were labeled "Jet A." I figured they labeled them that way so people didn't try to steal the fuel. Lyc doesn't make a Jet A engine do they?

If they were feeding them jet fuel, they were Soloy converted Bell 47s. They used the a C 20 Allison engine, flat rated. Same engine in the much heavier Bell JetRanger. Fantastic hot and high performance. Soloy converted th Hiller 12 to the same engine/gearbox and one of those was the first helicopter to land on the top of Mt McKinley, Buddy Woods at the controls.

I think this practice would cause more problems than it solved.

These had turbo Lycoming engines for sure; data plate was dirty and out of reach so I couldn't read it but I saw the turbo and the valve covers said lycoming. It did have plug wires so it had to be a gas engine.

It would have to be a diesel to burn Jet A--and the new 182 diesel will be supported by Lycoming according to Cessna, but it's not a Lycoming engine. Otherwise, put Jet A in a gas engine and it will pretty quickly destroy it--remember the crash that Bob Hoover had when his Shrike was misfueled with Jet A, which led the change to shape of Jet A fuel truck nozzles?

Then they were NOT fueling them from those trucks, or someone was really taking chances by putting avgas in a jet fuel truck tank.

No, Lycoming does NOT make a reciprocating engine that burns jet fuel.

Perhaps they operate turbine helicopters and were just using the same trailers/trucks to move the recips?

I guess it is possible they have turbine helicopters but I'm pretty sure they only have the two 47s. These trucks were new f-450 that the company had fuel tanks put on so cross contamination from previous fuel wouldn't be a concern. Maybe they put diesel in the tanks and fill all their trucks with it so they don't have to buy fuel when out on a job.

Anyways, thanks for the responses.

Maybe the fuel tanks on the trucks weren't meant for the chopper? Or the only tanks they could find at the time??
e.g. If I walk down the street carrying my Mrs's handbag for her, does it make me a woman? :^o :P

Anyway, if Lycoming do a ICE which runs Jet-A or -A1, it's news to me.
