Dog Co-Pilot question?

I just got Snoopy & was curious as to how any other Dog people introduced your dog to aviation? I'd appreciate any inputs as to age of intro, etc. My research on Dog Muffs told me they are a waste of money according to 90% of pilots who bought them?
Thanks Bill

Re: Dog Co-Pilot question?

Nice looking pup! My old dog has well over a thousand hours of flight time. She hates flying, but not nearly as much as she hates being left behind. She is never reluctant to jump up in to the Cessna, but she trembles and pants the whole time unless the air is silky smooth. Hope yours is more enthused about your mode of transport than mine is.

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Re: Dog Co-Pilot question?

Hoser the Wonder Dog was six weeks old when I stuck him on the co-pilot's seat. 17 years and one week later my buddy died with about 10,000 hours to his credit. Well travelled dog.

He loved riding. Airplane, bed of the pickup, or on the four-wheeler he got excited if he heard keys jingling. It was time to go!

Re: Dog Co-Pilot question?

I say just throw the little bugger in there and go flying. He's young enough that the mutt muffs might be tolerated.

Take him out to the trap range while you're at it. Have somebody play with him with a pheasant wing on a string while the shooting is going on hot and heavy.

Re: Dog Co-Pilot question?

Snoopy is 7 weeks old & got rejected from his first day of training by the trainer because he is to young. Those of you who know me know I am an old school kind of guy but I figured I would see if all the hoopla about training works. So far he is a puppy and wants to chew everything in sight including my pant leg. Although he is pretty good at lets me know he's gotta hit the Latrine except for the few times I fade out on the computer. He is not crazy about the car he whines until he realizes there is no use and then goes into sulk mode which is OK with me as long as the winning stops. I'm thinking in the airplane I won't hear it anyway. Sorry to hear about your loss Gump I too lost my LAB after 16 years. It took me 10 + years to get another Dog with a cat in between. Like all cats one day she just up & left to do her own thing. I like a dog because they are always so glad to see you even if it has only been 10 min. Flight logic thanks for the offer of Ear muffs I'll be in touch right now I don't think small is small enough.

Re: Dog Co-Pilot question?

Thanks Bill.

I never gave Hoser (or my kids) the choice to not like flying. We got in the airplane and flew. Same with the truck or ATV. It is just part of life and ya do it.

Of course Hoser was a red heeler, Australian Cattle Dog. Not much bothered that dog, and he loved to work. Fortunately for me, his "work" was being my co-pilot.

Re: Dog Co-Pilot question?

I have flown with every dog I've had as an adult. Klink was half Newfie, half Lab. Osa, Kodiak, and Blue were all Newfies. Tagg and Maggie were Golden Retrievers and Molly is a Golden, all related. The only dog which LOVED to fly was Osa, and she really did. The rest tolerated it, mostly on the theory that they'd rather go flying than be left at home. Molly sometimes likes to fly; other times, she'd just as soon not. Both Maggie and Molly learned to tolerate Mutt Muffs, though Molly tends to knock them off accidentally by pushing her head between the seats and the Mutt Muffs down around her neck. On many flights they stay on all the way to touchdown.

Here's a good shot of Molly, on the way to Leadville, one of her "I want to fly" days:

Invest in a special sponge to clean off the dog hair from the upholstery--and even then, you won't get it all. :)

Re: Dog Co-Pilot question?

Just take him when he is young. Have the wife or other family member hold him if he is the type of pup who goes nuts.

My pup was excited for the first 10 min. Then after he decided it was like the pickup he just went to sleep. Same ritual every time. :) Oh & he gets frumpy if he has to ride in the back. There is no seat like a co-pilot seat.

P.S. enjoy the puppy. They make everyone 4 years old & happy again.

Re: Dog Co-Pilot question?

Our dog Aero loves to fly cause he knows we're headed for fun. My advice would be to start him out young. Just taxi around for the first couple of times. Aero wears Mutt Muffs, has since he was a little puppy.

We give him little treats during the climb and descent. That way his ears are getting equalized. So far so good. He's alot bigger now, but still fits in the back of the Super Cub.

Re: Dog Co-Pilot question?

Our coon hound had her first flight when she was about a year old. She loved it because the whole family was along for the ride. When the tent was set up, she knew she had gone to heaven. I took a long hiatus from flying for a bunch of reasons and when I came back to the fold our dog wasn't as thrilled with the adventure. She is almost 11 now and she tolerates flying, but isn't excited by it. She does wear ear muffs and tolerates them too. I just bought a Maule, and am hoping the easier ingress and egress will make her happier with the game.
