Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

Just to complicate our lives, Drift just introduced the HD170 Stealth. It gives you more frames per second options than previous.

25 / 30 / 50 / 60fps in 720p or 25 / 30fps in 1080p

Maybe 60fps would eliminate the prop issues. If you shoot in 60fps you could also do slow motion. More toys!!!! More toys!!!

By the way, I found that if you go to www.MyPoV360.com specifically:
http://www.mypov360.com/buy/Drift_HD170 ... D1701.html and buy there you can get a get $30.00 off and free shipping by entering promo code ridergroups

Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

I've found the HD170 (non stealth) on ebay as low as 249, I know pilotmall has it for 275.

My Kodak Playsport is a 60 FPS camera and it doesn't help much with the prop effect. The first video clip in my review is 720P X 60 FPS and you can see how well that works.

As promised, here is the mount:

Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

Last weekend I played a little more with the HD170, this time adding a ND8 filter to help with the prop. For the most part it really helped and it does better at higher RPM's (makes sense). The only thing is, it's a pain to add a filter due to the fact that the lens rotates and it's really a wide angle. For the time being I just taped it on and as you can see I didn't do a very good job. And it's tilted... oops.

I'll have to come up with something better in the near future.

A short flight to KLIC and CO15. I have a takeoff, enroute and landing clip so you can see the different settings and speeds.

Also, the 720P HD option looks way better than the 360P.

2) the filter deal...look up ragecams. they have a lens kit protective cover that goes over the front. You can put filters right into that, and they even offer filter options (UV, etc). They said the cover can be altered for rotating the lense as well. Would also protect the actual lense from FOD. They also offer a slew of other add-ons (covers, batteries, etc.)

Anyone tried the Ragecam filter hood yet?

My only problem with the rage cam cover is it will make it less aerodynamic and more prone to vibration. Any thoughts?

Just to complicate our lives, Drift just introduced the HD170 Stealth. It gives you more frames per second options than previous.

The Stealth is their new model with some new features (as you mentioned). The other model (orange and black) is not being made anymore.

I will be getting some of the HD170 Stealth cameras in stock soon and will match/beat other prices when possible. I setup the online store to hook people up with good deals (myself included :D ), but not very many people have taken me up on the offer. Send me a PM if you're interested in a camera (etc.) and I'll make sure I save one for you.

www.skymountaingear.com - I haven't added them to the website yet, but I will soon.

You know me Zane, constantly selling something...just trying to increase the tens of dollars I make selling discounted gear. :D

Seriously though, I'm not much of a natural salesman and I'm always uncomfortable posting stuff like this. Skymountaintaingear is a side project (way on the side) and although I'd like it to be more someday, I'm just trying to share some good deals. If anyone finds these little "advertising" posts offensive, let me know and I won't do it anymore.

Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

mountainmatt,
great info--my question--if I mount the camera on my strut and focus the lens directly forward, I won't pick up the prop and cowling, right ?--or because it is a wide angle lens, I won't be able to keep the lens from picking up the prop?
Thanks

The lens is pretty darn wide. One bit of info is that the 720P is 170° wide and the 1080P is 128° wide. So if you want a narrow view, then just use the 1080P setting. If you stuck it slightly outward on either setting you should be good from prop artifacts.

Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

I have the ragecam shrink wrap lens cover. I also bought the ND 2, 4,& 8 pack from amazon (just 4 squares of plastic). Then I cut the ND filters into a circle and put them in the cover between the lens and the outside world (no tape required). They worked really well. I am still working on getting some video edited, but the best result was achieved using the ND8 filter and a +1 on the exposure. The ND filter restricts light and pushing the exposure lets in more light. I have finally figured out how to mount the camera right-side-up :P

PS I have the drift stealth

Post a picture of it when you get a chance. Does that allow you to interchange your different filters?

Looking forward to the video.

Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

searched my archives for a picture and I did not take one. I had to cut two ND8 filters because I got a crinkle in the first one and that caused vignetting. I was so excited to get the video going I did not take any stills. Yes you can change the plastic. I never did try their polarizing filter, it was to small. It is going to rain here for another 20 days and nights (20 already in a row). I will get a picture when I get to the airport again. wait... I have the camera here!

What do you guys think of the Contour cameras. They're a little less pricey.
