Early 180 fuel guage gasket leak
Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune or adjust something? Regs or maintenance? Need to know the best way to do something?
Well today was the day. I went out to the hangar to check things and thought I smelled fuel and then saw a little drip on the cement next to my 54 180 Cessna. Sure enough when I pulled the under wing root fairing down it was wet. I checked and the screws holding the fuel gauge were definitely on the loose side. Snugged them up and think I fixed it. I put this bladder in about four years ago and never had to re snug. Last summer I replaced the other side and checked the torque a day later and went flying only to return with a leak at the gauge. Snugged and re snugged for a few more days and no leak since. I can't remember for sure but think Eagle sent a thicker cork type gasket last summer from years ago. Anyway, I guess the almost 30 below we just experienced helped make it happen. By the way, the bladder I replaced last summer was original with 1953 painted on it. It really wasn't leaking except maybe when full and think there were cracks on the top. Lots of car gas through it too.

Mine seems to leak in the same spot when it gets cold. I just purchased a new long range tank for the left side because it also leaks when full. The bladder I'm replacing is original from 1967. It would be nice to get that kind of service out of the new one!
