East Texada strip

daedaluscan, we are looking at the possibility of making the east texada strip useable again. Is there any possibility of talking you into driving down there and taking some photos so we can start to develop a battle plan.
Thanks

Re: East Texada strip

Sure, my son and I ride dirt bikes down there all the time. Some interest here on the Island, really needs quite a bit of brush clearing for us normal folks, though a f*#k off cub could use it now.

I'll try later in the week and actually pace off what is useable.

The road to the strip is 4X4 only, but it is a lovely spot. I agree it would be nice to save it.

East Texada strip

Sorry for my ignorance but there's an airstrip on Texada besides Gillies Bay? I've flown over Texada many times and never noticed...

East side.. South end of the island about 1/4 of the way to the north of the island. I was scoping it out last weekend.. I almost thought people had been cleaning it up lately.

Cool, I'll add it to my list of things to check up on this summer. Would be a fun place to stop if I ever make it up there in a landplane.

Re: East Texada strip

Old Dan from Delta Air Park used to go there for cod and red snapper. He said it was one of the best places for them that he could get to locally. Things have probably changed but it would still be fun. Darren Adams flew in there on a Wings Over Canada segment. I think it would make a cool place to go and it is crown land.

Re: East Texada strip

My dad drove 3/4 of the way to the strip last year but got a flat tire and didn't want to risk another tire because he only had 1 spare.. I think it would be a great strip to visit though.

Have not got down there yet, maybe next week.

Spoke to Darren who said that tree height on the East end maybe an issue.

Re: East Texada strip

I fly over this strip several times a week and would love to see it available in an emergency. Please count me in for a work party.

Re: East Texada strip

Excellent Captin Kirk. When we activate the plan can we count on you to borrow a couple of those laser tree cutters from Scotty?(hehe) If you fly over often is there any chance to get some photos from above?

Re: East Texada strip

Just have not had time to get down there yet, I am building a hangar and busy with other stuff too. I can certainly take photos from the air, will try tomorrow.

I have talked to two guys who would be willing to rent equipment - a tracked bobcat and a grader, but this will cost $$$. Both say that they could get it down there.

From what I remember from my last visit (last fall) this is going to take more than just hard work, there is considerable encroachment onto the strip of alder and fir, some of it probably 15ft high.

Re: East Texada strip

Air photos and ground photos would be great in helping to determine if the strip can be brought back to a usable condition. We (BC General Aviation Association) went up to Beaverdale strip just east of Penticton with 9 people and got that strip totally reusable. There was a lot of alder and pines, some to 20' tall that were removed. Texada may or may not be reclaimable but it is amazing what can be done with some hand tools and the drive to GETTER DONE.

Re: East Texada strip

It looks pretty narrow, and one way in. Looks about 32/14 with 32 in and uphill. It was blowing quite hard today up here and gusty, much more than at ZBB.

Re: East Texada strip

Love this thread, even if it is a bit localized.

Can I get the strip at the south end of Clowhom lake (east of Sechelt) onto the cleanup list? I'm in to help, still short a plane though.

I think BC has so much to offer, even if much of it needs a bit of work, that we can get a lot of folks headed for Alaska to spend a few days loving this area.

BC, like Alaska, but closer.
