Swing on by the Murphy Forums. The website is a bit outdated but I think you will find a fair number of Murphy aircraft are out there operating as workhorses. Mostly in Canada but they seem to be getting more popular in the US. I love my Rebel and will look to upgrade in the future to the Moose

Just get a Maule. There, that's out of the way.
What makes the Russian MP14 unsuitable?

I'm biased but the Bearhawk would fit your needs. You can set the gross to 2700lbs and have lots of useful. The O540 can burn E10 fuel if you ensure the fuel system is compatible, use the proper fuel lines and seals. The DeltaHawk diesel on a Bearhawk would be really awesome.

3 people seating (so 1+2, all big fellers, 200 lbs)
600 mile range (or abouts, not very picky about this)
+ 350 pounds of gear.
All in all, I'd be needing little shy of 1000 lbs + fuel, so around the 1500 lbs mark.
Good STOL (under 1000 feet at gross for standard atm - although I would really benefit from a 500 feet capability at that, but that's probably wishful thinking).
Ability to use either jet fuel or MoGas (has to be capable of ethanol blends) is an absolute must due to the mission. ........
How about a Jet Ranger?
Seriously though, 1500# useful, 500' takeoff at gross, AND a low-budget price tag? Pick two of the three.

First of all, why? Already have three examples that fit all three points reasonably well.
Secondly, nowhere in my post did I say a low-budget price tag. Those two examples I had were cheap, because they happened to be cheap.
Like I said, pick 2 out of the 3. If inexpensive is not a requirement, that makes the other two very possible.
I'd say get a C185, or pump it up a bit and go for a Pilatus Porter.

Bearhawk with a O-409 and install a water/ethanol/methanol injection system.
http://www.airplains.com/index.php/news ... -injection You'd have around 1350 to 1400 pounds useful. If you build light...k.i.s.s Dave Robert's Bearhawk O540...three of us at 600+ pounds and nearly full fuel. About 250 feet TO. Little under 350 landing. Elevation 3200, 80F degrees.
