EI oil temp/pressure gauge problem

For a while now I’ve been having a moderately annoying issue with this guage flashing the display and indicator lights like it was losing power. We checked the ground, power source, quick disconnect connections, and recently, the unit has just decided to up and die.

So we sent in the guage, EI said no problems but they agreed to send me a new one after the problems persisted when we got it back. New one went in yesterday with the same results.

The downtime, missed trips and flights back and forth to the shop are starting to get more than enough to get really frustrated about, and now with an oil gauge that is just dead in the panel, we’re kinda stuck. Has anyone run across anything similar? Link has video of what it’s doing.

Thanks!

Re: EI oil temp/pressure gauge problem

Even before you got a replacement I would’ve said it looks like a bad power or ground and with a second unit doing the same thing, that’s even more likely. The connector on the airplane-side harness might have a come apart to check those crimps if the easier to find connections aren’t an issue. Finding these things can be hell since they are probably a decent connection and only open during vibration.

I agree with Asa. These things are so hard to find. I would consider completely redoing every crimp on the airplane side of the harness. It is a pain but it might be easier than hoping to find the intermittent problem.

Hope you figure it out! Let us know when you figure it out.

Re: EI oil temp/pressure gauge problem

We found a bad crimp and a bad circuit breaker.

It was actually fairly easy to find and made it all the more frustrating that it wasn’t found earlier.

Anyway, lessons learned, gremlins apparently vanquished and live to fly another day.

Thanks for the responses.

Re: EI oil temp/pressure gauge problem

Bad crimping and poor QC on my MVP-50 cost me thousands, very frustrating. Did not have to happen, a little more attention to detail would have prevented this. Other than the bad crimping issue the EI products have been good. Before you install any EI instrument or any other for that matter, take a few minutes and check the crimping where you can. Inspect all the plugs too.
