I got tired of the yes you can-no you can't, he said-she said thing re EFD approval.
So I emailed the Seattle FSDO, attn. airworthiness dept:
"I am interested in installing a Garmin G5 Electronic Flight Instrument for VFR-only use in my 1953 Cessna 180. This installation would not involve removing any required instruments, nor is it a "major alteration" as per FAR 1.1. As you know, the Cessna 180 was approved under the old CAR 3 certification standards which do not include any requirement for TSO'd instruments. Therefore, I am not aware of anything which would prohibit this installation as a minor alteration. However, to avoid problems, I do want to verify this with the FAA before proceeding further. Please advise,"
I was a little hesitant to do this-- after all, if you don't ask, they can't say no-- but here's the reply from one of their Aviation Safety Inspectors:
"You are correct in what you have stated. Just make sure that all the maintenance is completed by a properly licensed mechanic and that you make a logbook entry showing the work you completed."
So I think I will be going ahead with the G5. Not that this email is "approved data", but I plan to keep a copy of it with the G5 user's manual in my aircraft records, along with a copy of the logbook entry documenting the installation.

) makes it all sound easy, but when it says to go to such-and-such a page and do something, such as disabling the airspeed altimeter & VSI displays when the pitot & static are not connected, it sometimes takes several intermediate stops that they don't mention. Pretty much getting the hang of it though. Got to tweak it a bit more tomorrow and I should have it dialed in.
