Elk City Trajedy

heard this morning that my good buddy Curtis , airport manager at Elk City Idaho lost his hangar at the strip to fire....Curt has put a substantial ammount of his own money into the maintainance and upgrade of Elk City airstrip and has been a great host at the field... Curt and I were partners for a time at SDPD and he retired to Elk City.... He worked with the town and was selected as airport manager and built a fine hangar at the strip and I looked forward to my yearly visit to see him... this last week or so a fire erupted in the hangar which is preliminarilly to have deemed to have started in the electrical panel box ... Curtis was asleep in his travel trailer at the time and awoke too late to do anything to save the hangar or any of its contents... so sorry to hear of this and If I can get out of southern california tomeorrow for my annual trip up there I will stop in...

That is a tragedy
Just stopped to see Curtis a couple weeks ago. A great guy, and host. And he had a lot of value in that hangar.
So sorry to hear that.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Unfortunate indeed, but we can be thankful that nobody was inside of it when it burned. Stuff can be replaced.

Re: Elk City Trajedy

he had a loft with sofa and an office and you could sleep in the hangar but he had his travel trailer parked next to the hangar and that's where he slept..with his dogs.... the trailer got scorched a bit so I"m told but they were able to pulll it away from the fire... Lotta expensive stuff went up in that fire... Curt worked for Bushmaster after he retired...he was range officer for SDPD for years before he retired so I"ll let your immagination work on that...

Bummer for sure. Great guy, I only met him once but we visited with him quite awhile one day and he gave us the hangar tour. Lots of nice things in there to be sure. He didn't know us from Adam, but let Rose and I take his quads to town for breakfast. Really sad to hear he lost the hangar.

Wow I am really sorry to hear that. His hanger has been part of my regular route for the last few years and I too have enjoyed his hospitality many times. It really going to change the Elk City stop for huckleberry pancakes via his 4 wheelers .

I suspect he was staying in the trailer since the heat here has been record breaking and it would be difficult to cool the hanger.Turned out to be a lucky thing.

Re: Elk City Trajedy

called Curt today and talked for a bit... he said the electric box just exploded... wasn't anything he did... said he's going to get a shopping cart and tie plastic bags to the side of it and rummage through trash... I had to postpone my trip up there today... been trying to get out of san diego since wed... couldn't get to tonopah due to weather for two days... today we were IFR till 10:30 AM and I could have made tonopah but that was it... Northern nevada had a line of storns from east of Nevada to the ocean... couldn't see spending another night trying to get there on Sat so I'll go later in July when the weather goes somewhat normal.....

That's terrible news! :(

I was actually looking to stop there this summer on a CDA trip. Hopefully insurance is an option?
