I would be taking my Honda generator to plug the plane in, if I was leaving early. :)

Are we gonna drain our oil and heat it up on the fire just like the AK guys? ;)

We can build a fire pit, and after the coals are hot, run some aluminum dryer hose out to the oil pan. We can put in an inline impeller with a driveshaft connected to the rear wheel of somebody's Friday foldable bike. Tim will hold the rear wheel off the ground with 1 arm while you pedal hot air out to your engine.

Alvord morning cold start solution #1.

Zane,
Once you start using your bird for something other than a topic, you will get enough hours to overhaul an engine.

Once you do that a few times you will start working pretty hard at things like warm starts rather than cold.

My last IO-520 went 2000 hrs with no top. My last 0-360 went 2300 hrs with no top

So laugh if you will, I will continue to plug in under 30*

Hopefully, that along with proper engine management I will continue to get long engine life.

Cold Start

Yep, I plug the old 182 in anything below 40 if I know I'm headed somewhere the next day. Sure makes the start easier and the oil pressure comes right up.

I've heard tell of frosting the plugs? Then it's a bit** to start. :(

There is a lot of times when BNO is below 30 degrees in the winter, and your glad the heater works. Usually smooth air and great performance. :D

As far as temps on the desert?? We've had lows in the 20s here in town. Some snow flakes, and the Steens are white. So it could be a multi blanket/bag night.

I may be headed to an OIT open house that weekend? Hustling Owls.

See ya, Bub

Once you start picking up on the tongue-in-cheek nature of ridiculous suggestions in my posts, you'll end up patronizing me less. But, that was an interesting bit about your impressive TBOs.

I've been to the Alvord in October, it gets cold.

I want to think that Lycoming recommends supplemental heat at anything below 40, But I also bet that came from the days before multi-vis oil. Either way you aren't hurting anything by pre-heating as long as your not one of those that leaves the heat on all of the time.

Here is what lyc say's

DATE: July 1, 2002 Service Instruction No. 1505
Engineering Aspects are
FAA Approved
SUBJECT: Cold Weather Starting
MODELS AFFECTED: All Lycoming aircraft engines.
TIME OF COMPLIANCE: At engine start in cold weather.
In extremely low temperatures, oil congeals, battery capacity is lowered, and the starter can be
overworked. Improper cold weather starting can result in abnormal engine wear, reduced performance,
shortened time between overhauls, or failure for the engine to operate properly.
The use of pre-heat will facilitate starting during cold weather, and is required when the engine has been
allowed to drop to temperatures below +10°F/-12°C (+20°F/-6°C for –76 series engine models).
Be sure that the engine oil is in compliance with the recommended grades.

When out of the hanger in the winter I start the gen about 11PM

Plug in the hot plate to make coffee about 4:30 am

The gen runs out of gas at 5:30 I have had my coffee and the engines warm so we take off.

I just put my laptop under the plane and click on "US Veteran doing the right thing!". It not only warms the engine but gives off enough extra hot air and horse-crapola to run a mid sized greenhouse for three cold months in Sweden.

Even if I had a shiny new Scout, I'd still have to annual it, and I'd still be looking at trying to save $800 by switching IA's. Or maybe I wouldn't care...

The Alvord's not very far for me, but oh well -- I'm not gonna make a big deal out of this. I just get sick of missing fly-ins because of one reason or another. Looks like I'll never achieve non-poser status at this rate. I'm doomed to be a target for ridicule by old men everywhere. :P

You can help. Come up here, pick me up in the 8GCBC and let me burn some laps in it.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Went to a 182 systems seminar at Cessna Pilots Association in Sant Maria about six years ago. Always preheat below 40 degrees. It is not that then engine will not start it is that it is really bad for the engine. They gave a really good explanation as too why that I promply forgot but I did not forget the 40 deg and that is really all that is important.

I will bring my Red Devel, propane and an extra battery if you think it will stay below forty at noon.

At JC fky in it was at 38 deg when I started the plane ant it really tourqed m off.

And Zane, all you have to do is pick a fly in place and time and I will do my best to make it.

I didn't say anything negative about your aircraft, just the fact that you have a mantlepiece is not a shameful position.

You most likely couldn't meet the insurance requirements for a shiny new Scout.

But be careful what you wish for, I may show up someday when I have some extra gas money because I am sure you wouldn't think to pay.

After all I owe it to you.

P.S. If you really need a ride I would be happy to help you out anytime.

I'll change your username to Mr. Asshole if that's really what you want. Or I am I missing the tongue-in-cheek in there somewhere?

Edit: I added the link to help with the reference so that it doesn't seem too out-of-leftfield.

Hey Hey, Lighten up on the Janitor

Hey lighten up  Zanes plane is on one end of the state and he lives on the other. So it would be a PITA if I had to travel 200 miles to fly.

I'm less than a mile and still have a bitc* of a time trying to get in the air. :(

AND I did see Zane at the last Prospect SAR flyin, with the 170.

Zane, trying to help you out

See ya, Bub

It is a new method of developing heat to trasfer to your engine on a cold day!!!!

Ok I'm going to bed in a good mood because 1) In a few hours I'm going to be 33, and I love getting older! and 2) I overcame a huge technical obstacle in a script I wrote for Pilotcams.org

Woo hoo!!

Hottshot,
I expected discussion on preheating engines, methods and temps. etc. Instead I got treated to someone being renamed Asshole, Thought I was lost for a while
