Erroneous CHT

I recently bought a Cub Crafter Sport Cub with Continental O-200 w/ECI cyls. I put in a JPI EDM 350 for engine monitoring. Everything but the CHT's seem to be as suspected. In flight the cht's run between 90 and 100 degrees. Bayonet probes. Before I start the engine egt's and chts and oil temp all read approx the same and correct. After I am done flying the cht's will go up some until the engine cools. I put the prope in boiling water and they react appropriately. I'm a little baffled over this. I don't really want to go to the probes that go under the spark plugs. Do the bayonets need to bottom out in the cavity for the probe? Any ideas?? Thanks Gary

EI is helpful, I've had the opposite experience with JPI however, which is what he has...

Re: Erroneous CHT

I have talked with JPI several times and usually find them fairly helpful. The fella I got yesterday, not quite so much. Pretty defensive, didn't seem to really be willing to understand what I was trying to describe to him. I wasn't finding fault with the unit, it was working fine, with the exception of giving me unexpected temps. I put the probe in boiling water and it responded appropiately. But, I do think I found the cause. I stuck a wire in the port for the cht probe and it went through into the intake runner, so, I guess the chamber for the probe wasn't able to capture the heat from the cyl. head. So, I guess now my choice is to pull the runner and see if I can plug the hole in the bottom of the probe chamber or go the ring style temp probes which I really didn't want to do. I have heard that they are not quite as accurate, but will still give me a base line and break frequently due to vibration. I did read once where some are better than others but don't remember the brand of the best ones. G

Re: Erroneous CHT

Hi Monte I read what you posted, found the other port and reconfigured the probes and wires. Haven't test run it but feel pretty good that it will be much better now. Some think it's a waste of time to put engine monitoring on an O-200 (Maybe like putting it on a lawn mower???), but there are just some numbers that I like to be able to pay attention to and I have no regrets for doin this. Thanks again. Gary
