For those exposed to regular IMC, currency is automatic. The instruments and instrument currency are an obvious necessity.
For those exposed to regular maneuvering flight, the necessity of energy management techniques and currency is not so obvious. First, maneuvering flight can be generally limited to the pattern and, for low powered airplanes, mountain flying. Here a combination of contact and instrument flying will suffice, somewhat, if exposure is limited and bank is limited and maneuvering is limited wind is limited and the pilots concerned observe these limitations.
The eventual burn, given exposure, comes when pilots operate outside those limitations without proficiency and currency in energy management flying. The limits mitigate learning contact flying and are no guarantee that the tactical situation will not become fluid.
