Federal ski SC-1 on Champ

Will Federal SC-1 skis work on an L-16 with no bounce gear. We would only be flying off smooth runways, no off airport landings. The skis are rated for up to 1400lbs gross and our Champ is 1200lbs gross. they were built in 1940. We don't usually get much snow here in South central PA but, there is a bunch of people in the area that put on the skis when it snows and will give us some training. It sounds like fun.

Re: Federal ski SC-1 on Champ

Cliff,

First thing you need to do is figure out if those skis are legally approved on the L-16. Here's a link to the Type Certificate for the Champs: http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_an ... v%2073.pdf

Look under item 205 towards the end of the TC, which lists the skis approved on the various models. I don't see those skis listed. Which means they'd have to have an STC or a field approval. There may be an STC out there somewhere, but it is probably an orphan if so. If you can find an STC, even if the STC owner is gone you MAY be able to get a field approval to install the skis, based on the approved data in the STC.

Otherwise, it'd have to be a field approval, and getting field approvals for things like skis is just about impossible nowadays unless you're willing to go through a lot of engineering, spelled $$$$$.

All this to land in snow that's a few inches deep, for bragging rights?

I hear that Sc-2's work great on a champ with no bounce gear.
