FH: Wilderness Medicine Training for Pilots

Hi All-

Many of you know I teach wilderness medicine classes as one of my many jobs. I am also a firefighter/paramedic, ski patroller, and spent much of my teens and twenties guiding in northern Canada. Though I have had a specific aviation focused 2 day class in the works for awhile I have yet to put the time in to actually schedule and market one, but stay tuned. In the meantime I do have a pretty good schedule of classes here in Southwestern Colorado that would be great for any pilot wanting to feel more comfortable with their medical skills in the backcountry.

Here's my schedule:

Wilderness First Responder in Moab, Utah April 4-8 (taught at a group site just outside of town by the river, camp or bring the RV)
Wilderness First Responder Recertification in Durango, CO April 15-17
Wilderness First Responder in Durango, CO May 2-6
Wilderness Advanced Life Support in Durango, CO September 8-11
Wilderness EMT Upgrade in Telluride, CO October 3-7

These classes are typically filled with guides, public land agency employees, adventurers, college age folks looking to work in the outdoors, and docs and nurses. All the classes are certified by Wilderness Medical Associates International, more information about WMA can be found at http://www.wildmed.com

These classes are all taught by me and another advanced provider, and are fun and totally applicable to the environments we typically fly and recreate in. If you fly in I can help with ground transportation for any of our course locations. For a description of any of the classes and costs check out my website http://www.wildernessmedic.com, give a call, or pm me.

Good idea!

I did the EMT add on in idyllwild ca, great course and great knowledge add on (plus it counted as CEs for my renew). I'd highly recommend anyone who does any backcountry work take the wilderness first responder if they aren't medically trained and the EMT upgrade if they are.

I'd be interested in the advanced wilderness life support... Ever conduct the classes in Alaska?

I let my WFR from WMI expire a decade ago. I'd be interested in a 2-day refresher - though I don't need a cert for my career - just for the benefit of myself and climbing/skiing/aviation friends.

Our recert is three days, we add CPR certification too, normally you need a current cert to be in the recert class but I might have some wiggle room, we could not certify you as a wfr of course. PM me if you are interested.

WMA has some great instructors in Alaska and quite a few classes too, mostly in the Anchorage area. Wildmed.com has the full schedule. I would love to do the 2 day aviation focused class up there, not gonna happen this year with a baby on the way, but someday....
