Field Approval for 26" Goodyears on 8GCBC Scout

Has anybody gone through the FAA field approval process to put 26" Goodyears on a Scout? Just wondering how difficult the process is. I spoke with someone at the local (La) FSDO and he didn't sound too encouraging. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Seems like I read about an oversize tire worksheet. You have to do new W&B calc's, verify propeller clearance & do some test flying. This FAA worksheet originated in Alaska.

I did a Tundra Tire field approval this year. Very few inspectors
are authorized to do them. Tundra Tire worksheet has been superseded.
It can be done, just have to get the stars aligned. PM me and I can go into
Much more detail.

A Scout is a serious enough platform, just get the ABW's already.

That's some serious coin for tires but I'm more worried about wearing them out on the paved strips that I go into!

scoutdriver, I would suggest the setup I went with. I too have to land a lot on pavement. The best I could come up with is the AirHawk 29X11X10 reasonable price and STC should be all done. Alaska Bushwheel sells the entire kit. I am very happy with mine. They are softer than the blimp tires also.

agree with Rob. When doing pavement, I use the 29 airhawks on my scout:

Thanks guys for the advice! Those 29 in. airhawks sound like the way to go.

Just be sure to check the weights before you buy, they are heavy. They'll last forever, though.

The operators around here have tons of those tires with most of the tread worn off, from sprayers. Lighter, and cheaper....

Also, if you'd like a little smaller diameter tire, about the size of the 26 Goodyear, you can install 8.50 x 10 tires on those wheels, for about a 25 inch diameter, and a lot lighter as well.

The 29X11X10 come in a 4ply I think. That is what ABW sells. They shave the tread off too. The same tire comes in a 6 or 8ply I think for heavy weight carriers. You want the light ones as they are softer for bumpy landings and that is what we want, EH. They are still not as light as real bush wheels. Like MTV says they last forever.
