Field Repair tundra tires

Getting further from home so I'm putting together a tire repair kit. Have patched tube/tubeless tires for half a century; 2nd year with ABW 31s. Can't imagine a standard glue-on patch would work on outside of tundra tire; although 5-10 psi should make a big difference. What ACTUALLY has worked in the backcountry. And, suggestions for 12v air compressor. I really don't want to leave my Husky overnight while someone shuttles me home and back due to a stick/rock in the tire.
Thanks

Re: Field Repair tundra tires

I have used standard glue on patches and a combination of a standard plug and standard patch. Both have worked just fine andblasted for many years. Also the stuff that ABW sells to out in the tire works good. I think it's called Stans no leak maybe.

Re: Field Repair tundra tires

I carry HD tube patches I’d put on the outside. Also a tube of Stans to feed in through the valve stem. Mountain biking suguaro forest we all had slime in our tubes, probably the same stuff. For air a small 12v compressor to alligator clip to the battery, or a large bicycle pump, still trying both to see what’s best.

I've used the Topeak Fat Tire Bike pump many times on my 35" bushwheels. Larger volume pump than std bike pump. Works great!

I carry a small 12 vt compressor from NAPA. Here is an example https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/NCB4006 ... bJEALw_wcB. I have been lucky and not needed any repairs yet. The pump is handy when changing tire pressure depending on landing conditions.

I use almost that identical pump. Mine is actually branded Bell. Cost about $15 like yours. It’s worked flawlessly for 5 years.

Mine has a very long cord which lets me reach both mains from my cigar lighter jack.

To get the tail wheel I’d have to remove it or build some sort of cord extender, though.

Don’t have a cigarette lighter jack in my Cub, so when I carry a pump, I use a bicycle pump.

How often do you guys have problem that require field repair? Do you always carry a pump? I’m not super focused on counting ounces, but sometimes when I’m heading out hunting the pump doesn’t make the packing list. Haven’t been bitten yet, but maybe it’s just a matter of time?

These small pumps are awesome! Regular tire plug was enough to get home in my two experiences. Before that I never saw a need to carry a pump, till I needed one in a bad way. Bicycle pump works just fine, just a workout. IIRC 110 pumps or so to go from 4psi to 8psi with standard sized Walmart pump on 35 ABW’s.

Re: Field Repair tundra tires

I have never had a big tire issue. I carry the pump with me all the time because it is so light. I did have a tailwheel go bad once but was heading home so just taxied slow to the hanger. I do air my tires up and down on trips a fair amount, depending on what the conditions are. If I am going to places I have not landed before I will go down to 3-4 psi before I leave If the strips I land at are good I go back up to 6-8. The bushwheel tire repair kit can be split between a few planes, I think we covered 3 planes with one kit and 3 cheap bicycle tube patch kits

Re: Field Repair tundra tires

I have Ryobi power tools at home, so I carry the Ryobi 18V inflator in the airplane at all times. It's light enough and I swap out the battery for a topped off one every 2-3 weeks. It'll fill and re-fill all the tires more times than I can count on a full battery. Cheap insurance IMO.

Does your compressor have alligator clips or a cigarette lighter adapter for power?

Temporary install, if you don't want to buy a battery operated or hand operated pump.

Zero issues with my Airstreaks, lots of rocky off airport, but if so I'm ready as I carry a compressor and patch kit for my Montague ebike.

I like the alligator clips, those little compressors can draw a pretty good load if your lighter plug is just designed to power PEDs.

Re: Field Repair tundra tires

I've used cigarette lighter adapter powered stuff in the plane before--
always a hassle with the cord getting tangled up, cord too short,, making sure I turn the master off afterwards, etc.
This looks much handier, for air mattress as well as tires, esp since I already have a Ryobi cordless drill.

On the handier note, I know a guy who rigged a USB charger with a set of alligator clips,
so he can hook it directly to his battery.
That way he can charge his cellphone (or whatever) when parked without having to have the master on.

Yea it's definitely handy and beats corded anything, the lithium batteries have a long shelf life. I don't have a hangar, so I have to get a little crafty. When I removed my ADF antenna on the belly I installed a SAE (battery tender) socket in it's place. This way I can hook up a solar panel and keep the airplane battery topped off. When I'm camping it doubles as a plug for a battery tender cigarette lighter, which is usable without the master on.

50W Solar Panel (was $50 when I bought it, not sure why price went up.

Re: Field Repair tundra tires

Mine uses a cigarette lighter plug, Alligator clips should work fine and also be used on your friends plane if he is without cigarettes lighter plug. Might have to upgrade mine.

Re: Field Repair tundra tires

It is not time efficient. But I have something like this. I had to get an adapter to screw on the valve stem. It has a High pressure and a high volume lever. I obviously keep in on high volume. Still takes a good bit to just pump up a few pounds but it is super small. And very light.
