Fireproof clothing

A company called Massif Mountain Gear http://www.massif.com/ makes Nomex fire-proof clothing for pilots. I've got a fleece jacket and vest that I really like. They also seem to be anti-static.

making 'em spin. . .

The guy who started Massif is from my hometown. He was a rock climber who just one day decided to make his own outerwear. After a few years I think he somehow go into making stuff for the Forest Service firefighters and carved a niche making fireproof gear. Pretty cool.

nomex

Thanks for posting this, MH. The stuff is expensive, and I don't like to contemplate ever needing it, but I'm ordering some anyway.

I seem to recall quite a lot of discussion on the supercub.org website about fireproof clothing. I don't know about for flying, but that stuff might be appropriate to wear when posting on some of the internet forums I'm browsed! :P

flame-proof fora

You're right about that, Eric. Another good reason to hang around here.

We use Massif stuff at work for both flying and wildland fire - they are excellent (though spendy.)

I was going to buy insulated coveralls for winter flying but then decided if I was going to wear them each time they might as well be flame-resistant.

And so I just picked up a CWB-64/P winter-weight military flight suit from a surplus store in Fairbanks. Not quite as warm as, say, insulated Carhart coveralls, but much cheaper than the flame resistant Carhart line plus they are designed for pilots not oil workers  and are still pretty darn warm. You can often find them on eBay but you have to be lucky to see your size (or at least I do - tall.)

They look just like the BDU-green summer flight suits but have a quilted layer between layers of Aramid, and are a bit roomier to allow for warm clothes underneath.
