First Time In The Mountains!

Went up with an instructor out of Bishop in a C172 180hp and flew to Mammoth and then up Rock Creek. First time in the mountains. It was brief but completely amazing!

Re: First Time In The Mountains!

Lived in Mammoth from 1969 till 2005, had a plane based there from 1980. Owens Valley and the Sierras will make a good pilot out of you or else. Crosswind landing technique will definitely get challenged if you fly into MMH enough. Great flying around IF the conditions are suitable. Good luck and enjoy. FF

If/when I get my own plane I will most deffinately make it Johnson Creek and the like but until that day I'll live that experience through many of you.

Nice shots. That was my backyard for several years. Your CFI wasn't an old cowboy with a big mustache by any chance, was he?

Those pictures are so sharp and clear, you must have a great camera. Is that taken through the window or could you open the window to take the pictures?

Yep, Geoff Pope is his name. Seemed like a nice guy. Next time I'm up there I'll probably go back up with him.

It's an older Rebel Canon. Its nothing special but still nice. I think I just had the right lighting (which I think makes the shot), a clean window to shoot through, and obviously beautiful scenery.

The picture with the series of lakes looks like CottonWood lakes on the way up to Mt. Langely.......my wife and I really enjoyed backpacking that area when we lived down there.

It's strange when 6 month old threads get resurected. Is the original poster a mountain pilot yet?

Unfortunately no. I live in SoCal and only rent but it's a goal I have.
I'm in the processes of getting out of debt (school loans) and then would like to look for a 170 or 172 180hp. I know the whole little wheel verse big wheel thing :)

Re: First Time In The Mountains!

Good for you, but ya know, I have lived in mountain most of my life and they don't scare me but I flew out of sepulpa Oklahoma once and it scared the hell out of me, haze, poor vis from dust and smoke, everything looked the same in all directions, towers all over the place. I guess I mean just don't sell flatland pilots short, they have their own problems to deal with.
