Fishing during the JC weekend

Well, I'm an occasional angler. Haven't really done much since I was a kid, and I've casted a little here and there, but I'm looking forward to doing some in Idaho while I'm up there. Was checking out the Idaho Fish and Game website looking into buying a transient license for those few days:

http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/apps/fees/nrlic.cfm

First, who's in with me to dabble in the art? I know jmtgt is.
Second, where we gonna do it?
Third, are we looking at just trout? It looks like they a daily at $11.50/day plus $5.00 for each additional day. Or, a 3-day salmon/steelhead license for $31.50.
Fourth....flies?

Thoughts?

Fishing

Zane,

I am going to bring a pole, hook and as yet undecided bait. Probably a (...gasp) casting rod. I don't know the first thing about fishing, so don't know if I will do much catching. I am thinking about hiking up or down the creek from the air strip to see if there is the possibility landing a nice little trout.

Fishing Backcountry strips

Just returned from the Flying B on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, Idaho. All up and down the river the fish were bitting on dry and wet flys. Look along the bank and see what type of bugs are around and use something that emulates them on the end of your line.

Grass hoppers were abundant so a dry fly that looks like a grass hopper worked well. You may not use live bait (grass hoppers, worms, etc.) or barbed hooks. It is also a catch and release river. Check with the local fishing shops to get the scoop.

Finally, a subject I know something about!!!!!!!!!!!! When fishing in North America, there is 1 lure that should be in every tackle box. A spinner called the Panther Martin. Black body with a plain gold spinner is best followed by the yellow body with a plain silver spinner. Don't get too fancy! 1/4 oz. is my favorite weight. The rod should be 5-6 ft long, ultra- light, light, or medium-light action. I prefer open-face reels. Swivels reduce line twist (and the inevitable bird's nest). When in single barbless hook waters, cut two of the points off and pinch the barb on the third. Cast across the current and retrieve. Eezy! I was thinking about driving up, but alas, that pesky work thing keeps getting in the way> :-({|=

I have my flyrod, but I am fly-less. Perhaps someone could hook me up while we're up there? I'm willing to trade some trinkets-- candy bars, smokes, various prison commisary.

No fishing

I checked the regs...It says Johnson creek is catch and release only. Than means no fresh pan-fried trout. What's the point in fishing if you can't eat them?

Fillet and release only. Prefer the use of dynamite for limiting out.
Have fun boys, 15 Dolly's a couple of nights ago, kept 4 and a 3lb Rainbow for tonights efforts. Had a beaver (mammal variety) float past the Lab and myself, saw an adolescent Black Bear about 70yds away and a Greib with 17 young on the river tonight. There's no chance of any quiet time here!
