Fly in and Hunt

From my memory this has been posted already but I was unable to find it. I'm looking for airstrips or areas in NM, CO, AZ, that I can get into with my 185 with two guys and some gear. My goal would be to backpack from there, either spike at the plane or farther up the hill. I'm aware each state has its regulations which I would abide by, if I have to scout for two days then so be it. I guess I would need some public land to put in for or buy over the counter tags close to the landing site. Any Ideas?

There are a lot of Elk around Springerville, AZ on the Apache Indian reservation. Not sure of any remote strips there you can fly in to, or what licenses are required to hunt them.

Good luck.

Locations says Clovis. In NM, consider Negrito (0NM7). Our fall flyin at Negrito each year (1st weekend in October), gets woken up each morning by Elk bugling. There are a lot of Elk in that area and would be a good spot. NE from the strip is a small pond where I believe they water.

Good luck!

Negrito is on my list, I worked there this summer for about two weeks application seed on the Whitewater Baldy burn and there were a good deal of elk around there. I'm wanting something thats not soo "airstrip" and a little more remote but like you said its a good spot. Thanks for the help!

It surprises me that there is any good hunting on an a Native American reservation. The standard practice was to provide land that was stripped of all of the resources or veritably useless land. Then I thought, if there is good hunting, it would probably be an insult to the Apache Nation to hunt the land. However, after I googled it I discovered that the Reservation is managed with a recreation and wildlife department that encourages tourism and outdoor activities like hunting fishing and wildlife viewing/watching and that Elk hunting revenues are used to manage the herds and the eco system of the game lands. They also report that elk on the reservation have some of "largest antler bearing elk in the world" according to the site.

Sorry about the digression from the topic.

OBX:

A lot of the tribes have managed game programs. For example, if you have the money, Jicarilla tribe in northern NM has an incredible elk population. Not sure how many Boone and Crocket records have been taken on their land, but it is a bunch. For a price you can fly into their strip and be pretty assured of getting a nice elk. Jicarilla tribe is based out of Dulce, NM. Remote and beautiful up there. Not sure how many millions of acres they have, but it is a bunch.
