Re: Fly-in Mountain Biking

All the bike trails still open down here. Most amazing winter I have ever seen here, no snow and warm!! Most everybody put their skis away last month and got out their bikes. Have a friend that drove his Razor from Creede to Silverton Christmas eve. Most snow he saw was about a foot on the west side of Stoney Pass. Unbelievable!

ANOTHER Gravelly ride, this one in Montana. Ennis is the closet strip, (but pretty far, about 15 or 20 miles) but I talked to the FBO there this summer and they indicated any cyclists wanting to use the curt car would be accommodated. Driving to the start of the ride would make sense, then it's an epic dirt road ride at 8 to 10K, winding along the top of a ridge. I have yet to ride it, but have low level flown it several times, stunning!

Count me in!

A group of us have an annual Memorial Day fly-in at Red Hills, CA. We have not done any biking activities but there is an interesting bike trail in the area.

https://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails/red-hills.html

Perhaps we could use this location and dates for a combined fly-in. The Red Hills airstrip is a remote private airstrip and the owners welcome flying activities. Here is a link to a safety video of the Red Hills airstrip. It is close to Columbia (O22) and the above mentioned bike trail.

Please posy your interest in a 'Mountain Biking' get together around Memorial Day 2018. I'll add it to the Red Hills Fly-In if we have enough interest.

I am kind of partial, but lots of choice in NM:

1. Gila National Forest. Pic above is Negrito (0NM7). Also have Me Own (1NM0) and Beaverhead (13NM) and Double Circle (Z66). Double Circle is just over the border in AZ and is in the Tonto National Forest. All strips are great strips with lots of forest service roads and trails to keep you busy. I especially like Negrito as it gets very little visitors, has tremendous wildlife and visually really beautiful!!

2. Grant Besley Airfield (NM03). That is real close to some of the southern Colo strips mentioned above, so would be good addon if you are going there. Real close to the Rio Grand Gorge. If you are a fisherman, there is a trail from the rim to the river below. Long hike but great fishing if you go!

Good Luck!! L

88H;

I noticed on the sectional that these strips are all private. Do they require prior permission to use? I am new to southern Colorado and these seem like some fun strips to explore!

Cheers!

Negrito / Me Own / Beaverhead are all forest service strips and just require a phone call to the dispatch desk to let them know you will be there. Unless they have some kind of operation going on, there is usually no problems.

You can go to http://www.nmpilots.org and under the documents section, there is a "backcountry" section. Select that and then find the Safety Briefings. The phone number for Dispatch is in the safety briefing as well as other info that you might find handy.

Consider the annual Gila Regional Flyin that New Mexico Pilots Association puts on each year. It is based out of Reserve, NM. Will be 9/22 this year. Food is furnished. From Reserve, all of the above strips are easily accessible.

Hope you make it sometime. I am in ABQ if you are coming this way.

Regards, L

Ever ridden at Mammoth Mountain in California? If you like shuttle rides, they are world class there - about as good as it gets in North America without a trip to whistler. My favorite spot in the US to ride.

I'll aim to make that.

I'll roll it into my annual Sonora/)22 pilgrimage.

Check out Retallack Lodge!

You can land in Kaslo http://kasloairport.org/, and their lodge is only 15 mins away. If you spring for some heli-biking you'll most likely get me as your pilot. 8)

It never occured to me that there was such a thing as "heli-biking", but as soon as I read it, it seemed so obvious.....OF COURSE there is! Thanks for posting that 77, very cool. And I thought I was cheating by riding an ebike.

Re: Fly-in Mountain Biking

Fly to mountain bike trails is a goal of ours. I'm trying to figure out how to get two bikes into the back of our Warrior. I'm pretty sure our long travel bikes won't fit. I'm going to see if I can get a couple decent hardtails in there. Our other option is to buy a new airplane. Any suggestions for a good plane that will haul a couple trail worthy mountain bikes that's more economical that a Cherokee 6?

Perhaps something with a high-wing:

I suspect our FAA will not be as accommodating as NZCAA...

Bearhawk. I can put my bike and my wife’s in the BH without removing anything. They go in easy if I remove the front wheel. I suspect a Maule would work too.

Fly-in mtb trips are one thing I’m really excited about. I can’t wait till the BH is done!

Learn some VERY basic bike disassembly and you should be able to put ten full-suspension mountain bikes in a Cherokee 6 with room to spare. I can put four FAT bikes in my Cessna 170, and it takes less than twenty minutes to break them down and rig them back up.

Re: Fly-in Mountain Biking

Slight bump on this thread but wondering if anyone out there has some extensive knowledge about proper MTB riding out of airstrips in Idaho (not gravel road mtb). This could also double as anyone who has dirt biked on single track as well in these areas as a lot of these trails are dual purpose. I am planning a large trip next year to hit a few strips, camp and bike from the plane. Any info or leads is very helpful! Thanks! I've ridden some stuff out near Atlanta zone but trying to scout out a few other options.

Re: Fly-in Mountain Biking

Bike specific single track trails? Groomed trails  ? Helena MT has some right on the edge of town. Thompson Falls MT., Salmon, west of Gilmore, uphill from Smiley Creek to Galena Pass, and my own nearby town of Pocatello has great riding, and not that far from the airport. If you can settle for remote but scenic gravel roads, the possibilities are endless. Lower Loon, Copper Basin, Twin Bridges, Johnson Creek (to the old Stebnite mine site), to the east of Challis, the old mine site right above Mackay. Nowadays, pick about any western mountain town, with nearby slopes, and they will no doubt have some trails. This pic was about 5 miles from the Lower Loon strip.Image
