Re: Flyboard® Air

I'm a doubting Thomas. The website says there are 4 turbojet engines that provide 250 Hp each, plus 2 additional engines that contribute to stability. All of this is supposedly powered by the bladder of jet A on his back. A thousand Hp would consume fuel like crazy and I don't believe the little bladder on his back would be sufficient to fuel the puppies. Besides, I've seen the small jet engines used for TO power on some powered sailplanes. They are a LOT bigger, and provide a LOT less power than this little board is supposed to have. Again, it doesn't pass the Ho-Ho test unless they have developed some radical new technology. Heck, the water jet version uses a HUGE pump unit on the water to run the thrusters. I'm putting my money on this being an elaborate hoax, but I'd love to be proved wrong. It really does look cool, and their production values are really high if it is a hoax.

Re: Flyboard® Air

Agree, it has a really large cool factor, and would be a blast to fly once it is perfected and made more or less idiot proof.

In the meantime, I'm thinking it looks like a good way to die.

Jetting around at 100 mph close to the ground like that with no visible means of support or backup takes some kahones, I'll give them that! :D .

Re: Flyboard® Air

Here's a typical small turbojet engine. This puppy is 11" long, only produces 12 kg of thrust (26.4 pounds) and it consumes 390 grams (0.4 quarts) of Jet A per minute. A typical 200 pounder would require 8 of these engines to get off the ground. (without fuel weight). I just don't see it. I would pay to watch 5 guys race around a lake on these things though...

Re: Flyboard® Air

1000 hp, hmm that is a whole lot of hp. Even using 10% that is 100. Do you think it can be controlled that easily?

Big hp fast and big mistakes.

Re: Flyboard® Air

Here's another product development project that needs a bit more work. Sorry for the highjack but that 1000hp hover board thingy has been faked somehow. Doesn't FAA require a type rating for any jet powered thingy? The military has been trying for ages to come up with something similar though.

Re: Flyboard® Air

Yea, something fishy here. The dramatic look in the pilots face as he's getting ready for takeoff seems a bit acted. Also around 1:15 in the clip you can briefly see a white van in the background that is not moving. You do not see that van on the first pass earlier in the clip. Hmm..... [-X
