flying into Dave's

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

flying into Dave's

Last week I mentioned I had been driving though a ranch with the crane, going up to a cell phone tower site, and I had picked up the ranch owner who was walking up the hill to get to a tractor further up. During the few minute ride, after bsing a bit,I told him the ride "was going to cost him", and then mentioned I may fly in sometime, which he didn't seem to have a problem with. Well, today was the day, and after landing a few of my favorite local sites on the way, now that they are snow free:ImageImage once back at the ranch I flew up towards the top, near where the tower was I had been working on a few days earlier. Seeing a 4 wheeler and a pickup parked by an outbuilding, I figured that area was as good as place as any to set down. Plenty of room with a minor slope (especially compared to the two earlier sites) I made a plain jane approach, landing and taxied up to where I now saw Dave. Some people are scared or at least apprehensive around airplanes, so I shut it before getting too close to him, figuring he had probably not been around many aircraft up close and personal.

Long story short: turns out he is a THIRTY NINE YEAR Air Force Vet, now retired, and did forward air control! Going into hot spots all around the globe and directing our aerial resources to best advantage, right up close to the action. The C-130 was an aircraft he spent a lot of time around, among others I'm sure. We were both in the middle of our work days, me waiting for crane work to call, him doing something with a tractor, so we only traded lies for 10 minutes or so. But wow, he had been there/done that and had some GREAT stories. Something about S. America being the most recent.....nuff said. Best of all he didn't seem to be nervous or upset about my little flying operation HA HA! Small world for us fliers, what a great little flight. Thanks Dave =D> Image

The faster I go , the farther behind I get.

That is definitely cool. I love meeting up with old vets and listening to their stories!
