Flying into Hidden Splendor, UT

Hey everyone! I just tossed a quick video together of my flight down to Hidden Splendor, UT in a Husky A-1B.

That place definitely lives up to its name!

Enjoy!

Nice video. That one is on my list for this summer.
Has anyone hiked up the river to the slot canyon? It looks to be about 5 miles and I was curious if this was a feasible day hike.
The strip looks like it's in good shape.

If your talking about the "Chute" which is upstream, yes, I have done it. It can certainly be done in one day. I hiked from Tomsich Butte to hidden splendor thru the Chute. Its 16.5 miles one-way and a very long day but scenic and remote. One could go in from the bottom and back out in half a day, I would say.

Yip, the chute or narrows as they are also known. It looks like a fantastic place to explore.
So you went north to south or down stream? Did you wear river shoes or something similar and just hike in the creek?

I'd like to camp at the strip then do an out and back to the chute.

I have heard there are hot springs down river from the strip. Never been able to confirm that. Anyone know about them?

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Fantastic! Not many spots to set down in that country. When you get over that terrain do your ears automatically detect engine roughness? The mountains out east have all worn down, and the canyons have filled up. Looks like I'm gonna have to move west if I want to see that kind of beauty.

We basically did this hike http://climb-utah.com/SRS/thechute.htm but there wasn't much water in September. My friends went back and kayak'd thru the Chute in late May and had a blast, you have about 2 weeks a year to do it.

I wore old running shoes and my friend wore the same but with neoprene socks and he was more comfortable.

The Chute is closer to the Airstrip than Tomsich so your in and out idea would work well…. you'll always know how far in you have hiked to decide when to turn around.

Thanks! Upon walking the strip after landing we found evidence of heavy machinery on the runway looks like it had been freshly graded.

Not sure what you are talking about with engine roughness over the terrain?

Thanks for the link. It's on my list for sure. Sounds like you guys had a blast. I think fall would be a perfect time to go.

Really?
It's the same roughness that you get while flying at night and over open water!

Its the notion that when you are flying over the most in-hospitable, forsaken terrain.. terrain that would eat your lunch if you had to put it down… your senses become heightened or peaked and suddenly you hear noises in the engine that you've never heard before… you'll swear its gonna fail any minute… hence the term "auto-rough".

Our old Chief Pilot used to fly the band STYX back in their heyday. The tour/show would finish up and they would drop the band off in Chicago, except for Tommy Shaw who then lived across Lake Michigan somewhere. Walt would fly Tommy 90 minutes across the lake in a 172 at 2am    then back to Chicago alone. He spoke of the auto-rough engine over that lake.

Makes me shiver just thinking about it

What's scarier is night flight over the desert or water, no moon, no light and perfectly smooth engine air and motor, 8-[ is it gonna blow :?:
