Re: Flying the "bomber pattern"

You know, the ones that amaze me are the guys that drag it out as if on a long cross country....and still land half way down the runway on the nosewheel!

Then as I overflew the runway I saw them taxi off. Real nice. Things could be worse I guess.. haha. More flight time logged.

My apologies Z if that was me, hopefully it was one of the other renters . I usually try to head to somewhere less crowded then Scappoose for stop and gos.

While we are on the subject, another Scappoose favorite of mine is the crowd that migrates over from the HIO flight school. Can't understand them AND they are usually flying bomber patterns.

I don't use that one, but I can see why some folks do. I've come into pattern's where people are flying but no radio calls-- sometimes NORAD and sometimes just maintaining radio silence. And just like some folks like to blab on the radio, others seem to like keeping their intentions a secret. It doesn't hurt to ask if anyone else is around-- I try to maintain a vigilant "see and avoid" operation but sometimes I just miss spottin' them (nobody's perfect). That's what radio calls are for- to augment the "see and avoid" that we are all practicing. Right?

Sounds like Portland area / SW Washington BCP gathering or fly-in is in order! Check out that famous 170 of yours...

I totally agree with you there, a little situational awareness is never a bad thing! I am usually guilty of maintaing radio or minimal position reports if the pattern is empty; but will speak up and make a position report when I hear somebody approaching the airport.

I shoulda been more specific, #-o I was referring to that VFR guy that barges in on a one mile final and you can tell he didn't tune to the CTAF or make any effort to spot traffic until he cuts off an aircraft turning base. That guy who puts everyone elses "see and avoid" skills to the test. I think I have been experiencing a little too much Scappoose craziness lately

The first time I flew into Scappose was kinda wild...I was pretty low time, plus was kinda feeling my way to the airport (pre-GPS), from the river, then got stuck behind a guy in a Cygnet flying an extreme bomber pattern, then got spooked on final by a swarm of gyroplanes apparently operating under their own rules. I was glad to get gassed up & get the hell out of there in one piece!

Re: Flying the "bomber pattern"

when i was a student pilot my instructor and I were doing touch and goes at REX. We always flew NORDO and on this particular day there was someone out practicing their bomber pattern in a cherokee or something...tough to see when they are so far away. We did 2 landing for every one of theirs. I was kinda nervous cuz I didnt know if they could see us but my old crusty instructor had no qualms about it.

Re: Flying the "bomber pattern"

Last time I flew into Scappoose I was coming in from Seattle listening to the Com and was setting up for an 45 downwind for 15. On the way in I hear this guy for whom English was not his first language announcing around the pattern. He announced turning final for 15 when I was about abeam the numbers so I look out the centerline and ....no airplane. Then I spotted him about 1/2 way to Kelso at pattern altitude.

I guess with the language barrier his CFI had him go that far out so he would have time to communicate instructions during final.

Cannot fault this guy on not being informative on his announcements. I think he provided everything except his underwear size every step of the way.

I heard him last trip to Hillsboro as well, so I guess no one has shot him yet or the fan hasn't stopped on loooonnnnggggg final.
