Flying the Snake

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Flying the Snake

On my return flight last weekend from Homedale Id to my place on the other side of the state, I flew the Snake River Canyon the entire way, probably 250 miles or so. It is less bumpy over the water, and flown a hundred feet or so over the rim you don't have to watch for the numerous power lines and are out of the mechanical turbulence. I had a tailwind there and back  , and I throttled back and let it do all the work.
A modest little place right on the river, note pass through garage/boat ramp, a neat idea.

A money making hydro electric setup, privately owned, utlizing the abundant water that gushs out the cliff sides, interesting to get the big aerial view of how to turn water into dollars.

The usual 4" spacing on deck handrails of 4", overkill on most decks, not so much on this one.

The Perrine Bridge, don't even think of flying under it, the most important reason being it is heavily used by base jumpers from all over the world. Got a skylight?

That must be the mother-in-law's place on the left.

Passing by Pocatello, the winds were 25 mph out of the west, a direct tailwind at my 400' long strip, so in order to kill some time until sunset and the hopefully dying wind, I parked it over the hang gliding ridge south of town, and killed 1.7 hrs doing some dead stick soaring. I passed the time making a few phone calls and listening to the Sirius sat radio, and at one point got a very close fly by from the local Life Flight helicopter, close enough for him to see the stopped prop 8) K. I was running out of daylight, and still not coming down, finally about 10 minutes before sundown I restarted and flew the last 8 miles to my strip, where I was glad to see (eyeballing my wind turbine's rpm helps tell wind speed a lot, the sock was still straight out) it was a only 12 to 14 mph, still a tailwind, but that is doable but I did use the full length and even maybe used the brakes a little. The uphill slope helps of course.
Due to the throttled back down wind cruising and the time spent deadstick, the average fuel burn was 2.3 GPH over 8.9 hours, and I landed with another 2 1/2 hrs of fuel onboard plus reserve. A fun trip!

Re: Flying the Snake

No pictures.....beats me, I did it the same way that has worked before, sorry about that! Checking before posting with the preview button also showed it working. I'll try again, maybe a temporary glitch?

Re: Flying the Snake

OK, I got it figured. After I posted to this site, I was under the impression it was a done deal. Then, I deleted the same pics on my photobucket account, thinking they were good to go/could be viewed on the BCP.O site. Right about now, those more more computer savvy are laughing their asses off, but wait, it gets better!

After posting the pics here, I saw no need to keep them on my camera, just like I saw no need to keep them on Photobucket, so I deleted there also. End result, the pictures are gone, for good. #-o

Hell, use your imagination, better yet, fly the Snake and take your own damn pictures!

Stop at Murphey Hot springs for some pretty good grub, at the cafe about 100' from where you can park. I had a "fishburger", that was actually salmon, not the usual mystery fish paddy, good coffee too.
