Flying to KOH

Howdy, Was looking to get some feed back on this plan to fly down to the King of the Hammers this year. Its been on my bucket list of things to do. Got some buddies racing, that would load my Carbon Cub on their car trailer and take it back to their camp in the middle of Hammertown. Has it been done before? Did a search here and didn't find my answers. Thanks for any help you can give.

Thx Mike

Re: Flying to KOH

I'm flying my Zodiac 601XLB/Corvair down to Apple Valley from Nut Tree this Wed. Planning a lunch stop in Kernville. I believe Zenith Guy from SoCal who hangs out with Oregon Maul, has a dirt strip pretty close to Hammer Town. We're being met in Apple Valley by a racing buddy who is bringing myself another racing buddy accompanying me and some supplies out to Hammer Town to support a former chief mechanic for my race team who is running in KOH. I spoke to Dave Cole, head of Ultra 4 Racing, about coordinating with the photo helicopters for over flights of the course, but he never did get back to me as promised. I would think operating directly out of Hammer Town would be a bit of a zoo. BTW, we may have almost met, as I'm the Yellow Zodiac that waited for you to roll out on the cross "runway" at Willows New Year's Day. If you like, give me call: seven 0 seven - four 7 nine zero zero nine 6.

Re: Flying to KOH

RoughAir,

I'm leaving Oregon tomorrow and driving down to KOH. I've been every year except last year since they started the race and have spent a lot of time out in JV. I wouldn't fly in, the Military and Leo presence is huge at this event. Lots and lots of traffic, a ton of dust, and wind. I cringe having my offroad car out in the chaos, let alone my airplane. Almost every year when we are out in JV, the wind blows hard enough that we park the RV's into the wind because you wonder if they will blow over. We have taken a kitfox out there and flown before, but we folded the wings and put it in a trailer to store it. Not a chance I would do it during race week though.

A lot of places to land, but I would try and find someones private strip to park at, and even then, I wouldn't leave my airplane outside due to the high chance of serious wind.

Anyway, give me a call if you make it down, or if you have any more questions. The event and race is awesome!

Re: Flying to KOH

Too bad they don't set up a nice temporary airport like burning man does. I guess most people want to haul down their racing junk anyways.
