Are there any back ccountry flying tours? I was thinking that it would be nice to join up with a sort of "tour guide" and some other pilots to travel the back country. Are there any organizations currently offereing this type of service?

I heard/read somewhere here on BCP.org that you can/might be able to hitch a ride with Arnold Aviation out of Cascade when he does the mail run. I dunno, maybe call them and ask.

If my plane was up and running, I wouldn't mind showing you around some of the Idaho Backcountry for about half the fuel bill.

I still would like to be able to hitch a ride with anybody flying to or from Alaska some day. I'd pay my fair share of the fuel bill. Plus my airline ticket if I had to.

Not sure where you are wanting to go in the backcountry but Brian S. of Adventure Seaplanes does flights into the north country. Brian is a nice guy and also has a training operation. If I remember correctly he posts on here occasionally.

Just to clarify: I have an "OK" backcountry plane. It is a tailwheel converted K model 172 with a Horton STOL kit and a climb prop and some 850s. with this in mind, I am limited to fairly low altitude operations so Johnson Creek and places like this are what I am looking for. Additionally, I have taken Bush flying and mountain flying specific training in Alaska and have flown throughout West TX, NM and AZ . Now I am looking to join other pilots to go to places (like JC). I live in the US East coast (NC) and would like to join up with pilots from the region or nearby regions. Since I am flying a rather slow natually aspirated rig, I am sure that you guys flying turbo retracts will get tired of waiting for me so I am looking for people to join up with who have comperable performance to my aircraft (C170-172, PA 12, PA 22/20, ).

As far as touring goes: I am not too proud to pay a tour guide (if there are such services) especially if they can assist with getting me to good flyfishing spots. I have read about flying adventures in places like S Africa and Australia. I also recall reading an article in AOPA about Harrison Ford touring the backcountry with his Beaver with a group of pilots. I have no objection to offering a ride to would-be adventurers in between airplanes too if you have similar interests and good manners. I think that this would be the best way for me to get to places like this and it may provide a little more in the way of safety.

I would be glad to help you out I don't fly into places like lower Loon creek or Mile Hi, but have been in to many of the others in the back country, Mackay Bar, Flying B, Big creek, Sulphur Creek, Chamberlin Basin, and Johnson Creek. I fly a 1959 182 B model. It is standard with no mods added. And standard wheels. I have some videos on Youtube of some of my landings at these places. WW- how you been? We got back from our arctic tour, saw 107 polar bears, about 150 musk-ox, lots of caribou and beluga whales, arctic wolves, moose and excellent fishing. Are you going to the fall colors tour? I may get a group from MSP area and go to my farm strip friday then meet at Two Harbors for the flying tour.

obxbushpilot- I was out touring WY, ID and MT in june with a few planes, i may put together a ID & MT backcountry group tour for next season, if there is enough interest we can go touring out west in september. Your 172 would do fine, i have a couple of them. I have done many floatplane group tours through-out Canada and we may put together a arctic wheel plane tour for 2011 also. Let me know if interested and we can try put together a nice tour for you.

Been doing good. Busy as usual working on the log house and finally got my strip at the house extended. It still needs some work on it but the major portion is done. I am at nearly 1800 feet now!!! WOOO HOOO!!! Not too many guys were willing to come visit with a whopping 1,000' and trees on both ends.
I will have to consider going along on one of your trips north one of these times. Unfortunately my summers are usually too short.
Funny you should ask about Fall Colors Tour, I was just thinking about it early this morning. I will probably be attending. See you there!

I should have a flock of planes at my strip 20M south of HIB and 7 M north of Floodwood, we are having a surf & turf cook-out friday evening [elk & shrimp]. If interested i will get you coordinates. We will leave for Jaranson's memorial fall color tour saturday a.m. My strip is east - west, 2500 L+ 100 W foot smooth grass with good approaches. See you in a few weeks!

Thanks for the information. It sounds exactly like what I was looking to do. I am capable of handling the backcountry flying as it is something that I have always enjoyed. However, I am dead tired of going places alone and there is always an opportunity to learn something new from others. I wish there were more opportunities in the east for this kind of adventure.

Oxbushpilot - If you want to go on a nice western backcountry tour next season i am planning one again. Fort Peck reservoir, Missouri river breaks, Glacier park, Flathead lake, many Mt and ID backcountry strips and lodges, Black hills, Badlands then back east. Lots of fun and nice areas to fly!
