Thanks Cam Tom 12. The hanging Cobra was an Air Cav configuration with 19 round rocket pods inboard and 7 round pods outboard and the turret with both minigun and chunker. Alpha (Apache) 1/9th had a yellow triangle, Bravo a yellow square, Charlie (Cavaliers) a yellow circle. Delta was ground cav. Echo (Lobos) and Foxtrot didn't have geometric symbols that I knew of. The most famous picture of a helicopter in Vietnam was the Blues (Troop's Infantry Platoon of snake eaters) jumping out of a Bravo Troop Huey on a hill. One Blue is still on the skid. We had 1st Cav patches painted on the tails because the CG wanted Charlie to know who he was dealing with.
This looks to be a great series on Vimeo about the Vietnam War and the men that served. Lots of Hueys, Bird Dogs, and I even saw a DeHavilland Caribou.
A good book on Forward Air Controllers is "A Lonely Kind of War," by Marshall Eugene Harrison. He was my instructor at ag school at Slaton (Texas) Flying Service in 1979. He had a guy help him write it, so it wasn't as garbled as mine.
