For those with redirect errors...clear cookies

I've had some server configuration issues the last week or so, one of which is the updating of the cookie name. This can cause a "too any redirects" error as it tries to authenticate you to the forum by sending you to the login page and back. It's not visible to the user.

Also, if you have always visited BCP by using a bookmark stored long ago, update that. We use https protocol and no "www" subdomain. This should redirect automatically if you're accessing it that way, but for some it seems not to.

Direct to the forum topics: https://backcountrypilot.org/community/forum/latest

I cannot personally recreate the "too many redirects" or "permission denied" errors some are reporting, so diagnostics are difficult. I ask for your IP address because it's how I can see your requests in my server logs. I can't see usernames.

Clearing all "backcountrypilot.org" cookies from your browser has fixed this for most people who have asked me for help.

I realize the paradox of posting this in a forum you might not be able to view, but a preview of the message appears on the homepage in the "Latest forum topics."

Hahaha!

For what it's worth: I had this issue, cleared my cookies, and no longer have this issue.

Re: For those with redirect errors...clear cookies

It happened to me with my bank website and it took my bank more than 2 days to figure it out so when it happened here and I could access it with another browser I figured it was that. The bank said it was my fault so thanks for letting me know it wasn't something I did here, LOL.

Re: For those with redirect errors...clear cookies

Deleted cookies etc & still having trouble getting on using my laptop.
I was able to get onto the home page, that was a dead end until I loged out.
Then I was able to get to the forums, but trying to log on there resulted in the "too many redirects" message.

I am able to get on the site and do everything as usual using my tablet,
via the same wireless hotspot that I use at home for my laptop or via the airport wifi.
I'm not much of a computer dude so this is all very frusrating & baffling.
At least the tablet works right, just harder to type posts (maybe that's a good thing?)

Thanks Z. I was able to log in but I couldn't view the forum without logging out. Cleared the cookies for BCP and here I am.

Re: For those with redirect errors...clear cookies

I had just the opposite experience-- deleted history, cookies, remembered passwords, etc and everything else I could figure out how to do,
but still couldn't log in on the forums index page on my laptop using Chrome.
After reading the last post, decided to try the Firefox browser that's also on there and here I am-- go figure.
(damn computers anyways, grumble grumble.....)

Re: For those with redirect errors...clear cookies

I'm not sure what to tell you. For most people the clearing cookies has fixed the issue. Changing to a new browser isn't doing anything special, it's just starting from a cookie-less environment.

Clear cookies, and close and restart chrome before visiting the site again. Verify you're doing it correctly:

https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95647?hl=en

It is also possible to only delete backcountrypilot.org cookies without losing the rest of your other website sessions.

Re: For those with redirect errors...clear cookies

I deleted cookies twice, per instructions. On my laptop, I can open the main web page, but I cannot access the forums (either link). I logged off the site, and I could then access the two forum links. Log in, and I get the too many redirects message again. I'm using Firefox, which I closed and updated and still same result.

Everything works fine on my IPad.

Love computers.

Just to be clear, here's the screencast of deleting specific cookies in Chrome. It's the same for all OSes.

Re: For those with redirect errors...clear cookies

I did it a little different for Firefox Clicked the three horizontal line deal at the right side of the address bar. Then preferences, then privacy, then remove individual cookie and scrolled and found Backcountrypilot and removed it.

I had this problem and the fix worked for me. Chrome suggests this fix and guides you through it.

Re: For those with redirect errors...clear cookies

Per Zane's instructions, I cleared all cookies etc. from Chrome "to the beginning of time". Seems to have worked, so far.

But yeah, computers: ](*,) #-o [-o<

Thanks, that also worked for me. I cleared all cookies in the computer first, and that didn't work. I never considered that my browser also keeps cookies in addition to the ones Windows hangs onto. Sheesh.

Anyway, works now, on this Windows computer, but now I'm having issues with the I Pad.....and this web site.

Mark, make sure it's cookies you're clearing. See here: https://support.google.com/chrome/answe ... roid&hl=en

Re: For those with redirect errors...clear cookies

For those with problems, here's a good testing option for you. Which browser are you using?

If Chrome, try an Incognito window (Ctl+Shift+N) and see if you can get in. This launches a window completely free of cached credentials, cookies, etc. I'm betting it lets you in. If it does, then you haven't cleared enough data from your "normal" browser.

Firefox has a similar feature called Private Window (Ctl+Shift+P), and Internet Explorer has InPrivate Browsing (Ctl+Shift+P). If you're a Mac user, then Safari has Private Window (Command+Shift+N).
