Forum access: "TOO MANY REDIRECTS" problem

I've been getting reports of this issue lately. The easy solution is to just delete all backcountrypilot.org cookies and re-login. Just now I deleted all sessions on the server, so people may have to log back in anyway.

People with this problem likely can't view the forum, so I've updated the Help page: http://www.backcountrypilot.org/help

Explanation:

Viewing the forum does not require one to be logged in, but if the server detects a BCP cookie, it tries to process it to recover your session (automatically log you in.) It will redirect you to the login page if it can;t process the cookie, but once back on the login page, it sees that cookie again thinking it's valid and redirects you again and... infinite loop. Most browsers catch this so they don't crash.

Re: Forum access: "TOO MANY REDIRECTS" problem

Ok so here's some big news on this problem. For the second time I had my login's upset by the "Too Many Redirects" problem. I called a friend who also uses Mac and had him log on using my sign in info and he had no problem. So, it's at my end. I had cleared cookies and history here until I was blue in the face and beginning to imagine conspiracies and other paranoid delusions. So I got in the car and drove to my friendly neighborhood Apple store.

Here's the fix. Don't EVER EVER install "MacKeeper" on your machine. The damn thing actually redirects everything you enter to one of their advertising portals and then sends it on. It's a scam they use to gather and sell data. The tech at Apple removed about a dozen different files from all over the hard disc to completely remove the application. Just mashing the "uninstall" button won't do it because they imbed scripts to redirect you to their portals. So, I'm back in business. No more MacKeeper.

Ouch... you installed MacKeeper?

As a rule, don't ever install anything that's presented to you as an unsolicited popup. In fact, anytime you find software that you think might be good to install, thoroughly research it first.

Glad you got it figured out and it wasn't actually my fault. :D

Re: Forum access: "TOO MANY REDIRECTS" problem

According to the Apple tech, who was a colorful character to say the least, MacKeeper is owned by a Russian company that is known to write virus' and hack into sensitive government websites for nefarious purposes. You know; you just don't know what to believe these days do you? But, as I recall, I must have heard it from my parents at least 1000 times growing up, "don't believe everything you read or hear". I just thought MacKeeper was trying to help me out you know?

Now all we got to do is figure out why sometimes when you hit the submit button your text goes away and nothing is posted.

Re: Forum access: "TOO MANY REDIRECTS" problem

Started getting this message a lot this past week without changing the way I always look at the site. After deleting all the things I can figure out how to delete on my iPad it will work for a short time then start with the error again. Repeat etc. Did something change recently or is it me?

Thanks,

Re: Forum access: "TOO MANY REDIRECTS" problem

I did change something, and I can't say with certainty that it's causing this issue, but I've just now disabled it to see if it helps. It was a http response header change to help your browsers cache more assets like images and CSS.

If you've experienced this, clear your backcountrypilot.org cookies, then relogin.

I was having the same problem on my iPad and iPhone. I cleared my history and now it works fine.

Thanks Zzz. That's what I've been doing and it works, I've just had to keep redoing it to get the forum to work. I'll let you know if your change makes a difference. I appreciate the help!

Edit: Seems to have already fixed the problem. :D

There are 3 things in a web browser you can clear:

1. Cookies
2. Cache
3. Browsing history

The only one of these that will generally remedy the problem is 1. Cookies.

Cookies are used to store your authorization token from the server after you've input your username and password successfully, so that the server doesn't have to check the database every single time. Sometimes the cookie gets its timestamp out of wack and the server sends you to the login page, which for some reason will interpret your cookie as ok, and send you back to the forum, which sends you back to login, ad infinitum until the browser says "ENOUGH! We're not locking up this guy's machine."

It's a good idea to periodically clear your cache though, too. I often change things on the site that might not be visible or apparent if your browser has the old CSS cached.

Re: Forum access: "TOO MANY REDIRECTS" problem

I have been having the problem as well with my iPad with iOS 8. Happened yesterday, cleared all and worked again. Then just had it happen again. Did the clear thing and working again. Now for me it seems like it started happening after I upgraded to iOS 8. Wished I hadn't in general :(
Cheers
