Re: FS: 1955 Cessna 170B

Good Day,
Circumstances!!!!
Looks like you might be backed up against a wall!!
What is the AME charging you a month to keep, tie down and watch your bird?
Is it in a hangar? Is there a hangar available to do an annual?
Your kinda stuck until it's in annual as I don't think the FAA has any authority to issue a Ferry permit in CA. Also I don't think you can fly in CA with a US ferry permit??
Plus it will need a new sticker to get into America!!
You need to find a A@I coming down from AK this fall to do an annual and bring it on down to you.
Maybe Bill needs a good Excuse to go there and he could bring it back for you!!??
Good Luck

Re: FS: 1955 Cessna 170B

Yes, I saw the plane this morning in Barnstormers...been looking for a good 170B and I'm not afraid of a Franklin engine. But as was stated above, there may be issues getting it back. Seems like the thing to do is take an AI up to Ft St John, but that sounds like big $ just to check out the plane.

My information is that the FAA will issue a permit for a N registered aircraft anywhere in the world and there is a process for that facilitated as usual by the FAA-certificated A&P, but the nation where the aircraft is located must recognize it as being valid for flight, and in this case Canada does through an agreement. I suppose that info could be bad I'm still in the process of looking into it.

Either way I've discounted the airplane from what I think it could bring, in case someone with access to an A&P certificate and an IA - either in their own pocket or their buddy's - would be interested, yeah it is a long shot. Then there's someone from Canada who might want to "import" it. I think I can work it out with someone for temp hangar space for work, there is even a BCP member here who lives there - though unfortunately I lost his handle in the BCP transition.

That's a nice looking 170. I knew the former owner, Jim Stewart, who used to keep it at Bellingham. I have a snapshot of him flying alongside me (me in my ragwing 170) down the Skagit River valley, on the way home from the Concrete Fly-in in 2003. You should buy it & bring it back home to B'Ham, Littlewheel.

Yes this is/was his plane. I have a photo of him with it on a beach somewhere around Yakatat. One year he came to visit it in Denali when I lived there. In many ways it is better now with some upgrades and a lot of new parts.

I'm still trying to catch up on messages about the plane but I'm likely to move forward with having the annual done and moving it with some help which has been offered. The price will then go back up to what I feel the plane should bring, though until that happens there is still an opportunity for a bargain.

That's a hell of a bargain for somebody, and would be a great mini-adventure to wander up to Ft St John with an IA to do the annual.

That does look like a good deal. Just curious, as I'm sure others are too. What kind of performance figures do you see with the 165 Frank as opposed to the C-145/O-300 powered 170s? I bet it's a good 25mph faster than my 170.

It's pitched for climb now so that is where the performance is, Even with the finer pitch it still cruises a couple of knots faster than stock. After all the 170 is a dirty airplane in cruise even without a nosewheel dragging out front. Not the performance of the Lycoming or Continental 180hp conversions but still very noticeable. Keep it under 2100 lbs it will takeoff and climb - well, not like a homesick angel, but pretty darn good. At gross weight it still makes you wish for a C185 but there is more margin than with the O-300. It has become the new normal for me when I flew right seat in a friends stock 170A a few months ago I was wondering when we would ever lift off the centerline ;)

With the stock 76x53 prop before I changed, I was seeing 110-112 knots (not MPH) at 2500rpm. With a 55 pitch cruise prop it should move pretty good. It loves mogas if you have a source.

One more reason to be sorry that we never flew them side-by-side out to Minchumina. Best of luck with your predicament.

Avey field, or Dorthy Scott would work Bill, and I can fix you up with a hangar in Colville, 63S or you more than welcome to use mine 82WN, it's pretty full, but could open the door if it's rainin. If you use mine, i can come up with a bed and some food for ya, I can maybe find a bed for ya in Colville also, my camper is beside the hangar you were at before.
I'm in Nulato so can't help much but offer.

True, I'm lucky to see 105mph now at 2550RPM. At least it gets off the ground a little quicker now.

FWIW Jefferson County in Port Townsend WA is an airport-of-entry with customs service, and there are a couple hangars available for doing an annual in and for storing the airplane until such time as it can be flown out again. If you're interested, I can put you in touch with the hangar owners.

Re: FS: 1955 Cessna 170B

I can explore finding hangar space for an annual at CYXJ, for a IA who could/would travel up there. I haven't yet broached the subject with anyone up there yet but odds would be good.

Maybe I should just buy it and save you the trouble of moving it. 2 hr flight and she'd be parked on my front lawn beside my Citabria...

Having the plane already located in Canada, would certainly help some of the traditional logistical issues of importing. Looks like a beautiful bird!
