Fun airstrip photo - Papua

Evening folks,

Thought you might appreciate this snap shot I took the other day of Kegata Airstrip in Papua:

Image

It's certainly one of the more fun ones we go to with the PC-6. Specs for this airstrip are:

Length: 340m
Elev: 4600ft
Slope: 10%

It's plenty long enough for even a fully laden Porter and we tend to be hauled up by mid-way. I only taxied to the top for the photo as it's just begging for a snapshot like this to be taken 8)

How do people earn money up there? It is beautiful but, the demographics seem challenging?

Glad to see you back having fun! Nice photograph. Fly safe!

Probably a missionary/volunteer or almost volunteer deal, flight time for your logbook, helping other human beings, and a thanks from the natives?

If a loaded Porter is off in half the runway, doesn't that mean you could be operating a Twin Otter with some level of safety?

I love the angle for the photo and the view from there! Good for you, working in a remote place to help others. Life is short, and you seem to be doing something you can be proud of.

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Awesome pic!

Re: Fun airstrip photo - Papua

I'm not a missionary btw! I earn a fair wage for what I do which is a bonus considering I totally love my job. And I'm most certainly not flying out here just to build hours. I couldn't give crap about how many hours I fly. I'm here because I have no desire to fly big jets!

I'm not familiar with the Twin-Otter's performance but I'd be surprised if you could operate one in/out of here. The only other type I'm aware of that flies into this airstrip is the Cessna 206, and that won't take 900kgs of rice in or 10 pax out ;)

Well, up until the last century they ate people primarily. It was quite an interesting industry from a conservation point of view. I suppose they may have supplemented with a few greens and the odd unlucky monkey now and then but it worked well for many thousands of years.

There were a few places in the Carolina Is. that I was warned about that!

I like Yap Is., peacefull and topless! Americans are welcomed! I was treated like a King there!
