That is pretty cool, thanks for posting! I flew over that place once and remember seeing that hangar.

That is a great story! My dad ran an Ivo prop on his first kitfox, and I remember him telling me the story of Ivo's escape. What a guy!

Re: Gliding Out Of Communism- You Guys Know This Fella? UTAH

Spotting his hangar for the first time, not knowing who owned it (though I've known his story for years) I was struck by the fact that the hangar has NO WINDOWS. Knowing later that some one lived there makes that even more of a puzzler for me. I'm not talking lots of windows, on the west side, I get that. But damn with a great view like he has, a few, with provision for summer time shading would be the way I'd go. He was probably going for a stealth factor. Whatever, to each his own, a super interesting guy. =D>

We haven't been out to visit him for a few years. Last time we were out to see Ivo, he was just beginning unmanned test flights with the Hawk . Interesting person and place. He likes visitors if given advanced notice. Hell, who wouldn't like visitors living way the hell out where he is!

His camo'd 172 shows up in Ogden all the time, probably a (Bi-)weekly re-supply mission, but I've never been there when he is passing through. What a guy.

I'd love to meet him and shake his hand \:D/

I've seen his camo 172 plenty of times in Ogden (KOGD) but never met Ivo. I've considered flying out to his place, but then again, never have. I've been told he has a girlfriend in Layton or Kaysville, UT.

Re: Gliding Out Of Communism- You Guys Know This Fella? UTAH

For years we had been using Ivo's props on our hovercrafts and I knew how strong they were, because I occasionally went backwards into the bush along the river bank at full throttle. The bush always came out second best. He made an 84" magnum paddle prop but only in a pusher design. I asked him many times if he could do a tractor version for us when we were building Bearhawk #357 the Rover Hawk. NO I DONT DO IT was always his answer. But he always asked "what kind of motor you use anyway". Next time I asked the answer was still NO but "what kind of drive you use anyway". Then one day out of the blue I get a call " OK I build you that prop, send money I will ship the prop, it is finished." I said we would and confirmed the prop was the 84" 3blade. "No you do not have enough power for that you only get 80" three blade for your system." We got the prop and bolted it on and wound it up and we got 4750 rpm. Maximum horsepower was listed at 4800. I phoned Ivo and told him jokingly that we only got 4750 rpm out of it and he was 50 rpm short. There was a short pause then he returned with" it must have been 50* that day, I designed it at 60* so it works good, goodbye" He was just laughing when he hung up the phone. Recently when Darcy made some power upgrades to the motor the prop needed to be upgraded as well and once again the IVO boys came up with this 4 blade prop that has two different blade lengths and the thing looks like a railroad crossing sign and again another leap of faith required. The end result is exactly what Darcy wanted and this thing just kicks ass. It gets off the gravel bar like a Carbon Cub, will climb straight up the face of the mountain and run with the 180's all day long.
