No, but can anyone here confirm or debunk the stories I hear about how some who've had a prop strike with an MT prop in a remote location have simply sawn off the blades to the same length and flown home?

Re: Go Around!!!!

Any prop strikes with MT props that I've heard of ended up with a lot of tooth picks. No blade left to saw off. But I have only heard of a couple.

I tend to agree...

The composite layering would shred rather than break clean at a stress point, I would guess. Unless the object struck produces a super high (I mean knife edge) stress riser. Unsolicited opinion.

All the prop strikes here in Hawaii have been on aluminum propellers and the engines had case and crank issues costing huge amounts to repair. A composite may have precluded some of the damage.

The age of personal electronics... a pilot that can fly should (usually) have enough comms on board to notify somebody for help too. Flying home like the guy did in the video was interesting, rather than going around and landing (gear down). But, I was not there thankfully.

Re: Go Around!!!!

Photograph below makes sense for a composite layered propeller. Shredding....

Still seems cheaper than a bottom end overhaul.

Re: Go Around!!!!

My guess, being Florida and depending on the departure point... maybe the pilot had some cargo that would attract some unwanted attention following a gear up landing...

Go Around!!!!

+1. Too close to home.

My red had 17 years around props and only one close encounter.

Re: Go Around!!!!

The owner was renting a place right off the runway and let his dog run loose a lot. The dog liked to chase cars and airplanes. The owner of the RV10 only had a bout 70 hours on it and the engine and prop. No one seemed to think it was as dangerous as I did and nothing was done to stop it. Could have been worse of course...well maybe not for the dog.

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

Re: Go Around!!!!

So the gear were down and he raised them back up to do what?

Looked like he was in a flare until the belly/props scraped and then he pushed the throttles up.

I'm not a 10k hour guy or anything, but I always say "positive rate: gear up" in my takeoff/go-around checklist. Positive climb rate.
