Going for a Husky...

Well, it's a trip report, of sorts. Feel free to disregard...

I had been looking for a super cub, or Husky, as I felt that one of these two would suit my "needs" (manspeak for "wants"). I've looked at several, put one plane into prebuy, but found some undocumented damage. So....finally found a Husky which by all accounts is as represented. Headed out today via the ATD to go look, and if it's as represented, will hand over some savings and head home...which will be the fun part. Planned route is from the SFO bay area, out over the mountains, will RON tonight in Bishop, CA, then on to Lubbock TX tomorrow (my parents live in Lubbock, so a good excuse for mom's cooking, as well as the "free hotel room". On wednesday will make my way back to mississippi.

So, I haven't been on the ATD in several years (generally, if I can fly myself there, I do so, have been from ME to Key West to CO in the past year, never near the airlines...)but this time couldn't find anyone locally that I could bribe into giving me a ride out west...and, I have to say, it was much less painful than anticipated. The TSA didn't hassle me about my headsets, gps, or PLB, and even though I'm having to do this in 4 legs on the airlines, each time the attendants have shown up with a fresh cup of coffee because we don't get off the plane at all...

So, fellow BCP friends, those of you who have given advice, thanks much, and for the rest of you, stay tuned....I'll post some pix as we go. I'm doing the SPOT thing, and if anyone wants to follow that, PM me your email address and I"ll email you the link to our SPOT tracks....

Re: Going for a Husky...

When you get to Bishop, there are two places you gotta visit.

First, Meadow Farms Smokehouse on the far north end of town. It's on highway 395 as you're heading out of town towards Mammoth. The main street goes north up through town, and almost at the end of town there is a T... if you keep going straight it takes you on Highway 6 to Benton, Chalfant, Mina, Tonopah etc. If you turn left (towards the Sierra Nevada moutnains) you stay on 395 towards Mammoth and Bridgeport. Stay on 395, go about a quarter or half a mile, and it's on your right. Best jerky, best smoked meats & bacon, and best manly man meat goodies you ever had. Ever. Their Landjaeger sausage is fantastic.

Then in the middle of town on the main drag is Schat's Dutch Bakery. I think it's called Erik Schat's now, there was a huge family battle after the old man died 15 or 20 years ago (I bought my best glider from Dan Schat who I think was the losing party in that battle). They have the most fantastic breads and baked goods... world famous for their signature Sheepherder bread.

Re: Going for a Husky...

Thanks for the tips, EZF...we're going to arrive, if all goes per schedule, about 7 p PDT tonight. We'll have to get a ride to the hotel, but if we can get a ride to the meat place, we'll be there for sure.

Trying to get home in a couple days, so won't have as much time to run around as I'd like.

If you want the SPOT tracks, PM me an email, I'll forward the link. I'd post it but I don't want the bots picking it up.

southern boy.
Congrats on the new husky. You must have traveled South West?? I did a similar west to east trip and we stopped five times, but always stayed on. We got to know the stu girls so well, that they agreed to go to dinner with us at Columbus.

Yes, it's a number of stops...but the FAs are all guys...doubt I'm gonna ask anyone to dinner!!

But, they're doing a really good job of taking care of everyone. At each stop, fresh coffee while they got the plane ready.

I think I know who's airplane you bought. If it's Mike's, you got a great airplane. Enjoy.

The gang at SuperCub.org will beat you like a rented mule :D Please go to their site to announce your new baby and how nice it is, put on flame suit.
Probably be best to bring the warbird to NH next year. I have flown a couple Huskies, they are a beast, congrats

Re: Going for a Husky...

Sticknrudder: yes, it was Mike's. I believe he had taken good care of it. Certainly was "as represented".

Ya, I'm getting ready to take my beatings over at SC.org. I really enjoy that forum, but I may get kicked off.... :D :D

I would have liked a super cub, but the ones I found were either way over my budget, or too tired to use. I'm very optimistic that this Husky is going to fill the bill exactly. Has gyros, which in our part of the country can make the difference between sitting on the ground, and getting home. Sadly, I still have a job, so have to show up on time occasionally....

here's a couple pix from the flight. We arrived in OAK, a friend from Beechtalk picked us up, took us over to HWD, then looked the plane over, flew it, then did paperwork. Headed out from HWD to the east, then over the mountains into Bishop, CA. Some of that country made me glad I had put together a "survival kit", if we had had to put down somewhere there, it could be a while before someone found you....

Here's a couple pix...more to follow today. Headed out to North Las Vegas, then Winslow, then Belen, then Lubbock.

Getting kicked off that forum ain't that bad. Badge of honor as far as I'm concerned... Been there, done that  I was holding my own in a rather epic battle against 8 or 10 of their neurosurgeons for several months, until the forum admin politely asked me to take the discussion elsewhere (due to a comment I made at Oshkosh). Some of the fish in that pond conduct themselves like the typical 'group of thugs' in a martial arts movie. No holds barred and no blow too low when they're attacking, but when the "victim" turns around and starts swinging back they get all shocked and insulted and cry foul. But... I did let my Antonov 225 sized ego get in the way, and my claim was later proven to be only 2/3 accurate.

Actually, anyone who wants to can go over to Supercub.org and search for the topic and make their own judgment.

Those folks do like to poke fun at Husky aviators, but it's all in good natured ribbing. It is a great forum, with a lot of really good information to be had. I would point out that they were apparently kind enough to leave the shelter up at Johnson Creek for the BCP crown. A nice gesture from a good bunch of folks.

Kind of like the folks on this forum treat us Maule aviators...it's alright, we know it is born out of jealousy.

Stan,
I know we talked Cubs, but if you're going to run amphibs, I feel you made the right choice with the Husky. Just remember that dog's bite! (flap hangars = OUCH). :D

Looks like Stan is making good time in the Husky and is just outside of Jackson, MS.

All the SC.org'ers I've met have been top notch people.

Re: Going for a Husky...

Guys, I"m home, had a great trip.

16:52 flight time. Burned about 1.5 qt of oil. Clean belly (on the plane, not mine) at home.

Filled up on good Mexican food (Winslow, AZ has a good restaurant on the field, then my mom's then today at Bridgeport TX). Can't get good Mex food in MS.

Would do the trip again in a heartbeat.

The SC folks I've met have been very nice. They joke with me, and I do with them, but I feel welcome there (as I do here).

Lonnie, got your message, but it was late, and my mother was talking until after I was asleep last night...I'll call you in am.

Thanks all...had a good time.
