Goodyear Crosswind Gear
Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Has anyone ever flown an aircraft with these installed? I realize they are from yesteryear, but a few planes I have looked at have had them...just wondering if it's a good thing or a must replace.

I think they have caused more accidents than prevented them.

The gal next door at N86 has a C-195 with crosswind gear. My A&P did the annual on it and told her to get rid of it because it is just plain dangerous because of the Goodyear brakes. She told him she wanted to keep the plane "original". She also owns an original cub that won 1st place at Osh. I got to fly the Cub which is a gas. Goodyear brakes on a taildragger IMHO is a truly bad idea. Right up there with Lead\Acid in an airplane. Don't know why there is not an AD on Goodyear brakes. Maybe because no one gets hurt in the ground loop. But airplanes get bent and insurance goes up. Go figure. Get Cleveland.

Zane Years ago they called them Widow Makers. Since they stoped teaching pilots how to fly by the seat, flying the 195 with Xwind gear has become a lost art. If you get a chance to fly with them it can be a real rush. I found it's best not to think too hard when you are lined up for landing on short final looking out the passenger window.
