Re: Goose on Ice

This is the note from Joel Natwick of Tanalian Air in Lake Clark;

This aircraft had some kind of fuel issue that caused a double engine failure. He landed on Lake Clark and broke through the ice. Tomorrow we will attempt to break it free from the ice in -15 weather and fly it off the ice. I will let you know how it goes.

I think it is just as interesting to see the ski brakes on the cub.

Wow I can think of about a thousand times when those ski brakes would have come in handy. especially on the C206 on skis .. =D>

Re: Goose on Ice

STC'd ski brakes have been around for years. I've had them on my Airglas 3000s for close to 15 years.

Re: Goose on Ice

Ski brakes are very effective on ice, as the demo video shows. They have an inherent safety feature in that once the tail comes up too high (from excessive braking) the pick disengages from the ice so a nose over is averted. The pilot can be very aggressive with the brakes. The brakes are not very useful in anything short of hard ice. There's very slight braking in hard packed snow and zero braking in any surface soft enough to leave tracks in. All said, I suspect most of us that have ski brakes got them after we scared ourselves on slick ice. That's what motivated me to get mine. :-)

Did he get some of that Rusky fuel delivery? Glad he made the landing ok.

Lynn Sanderson (Dirtstrip) passed away from natural causes in May 2013. He was a great contributor and will be missed dearly.

Re: Goose on Ice

I bet that lake looked pretty damned good when both engines got really quiet!!

Re: Goose on Ice

Somewhere around 1977, Swede Erickson bellied a Goose in on the tundra on the Urilia Bay side of Unimak Island. He had one engine fail, and the prop refused to feather. He was on his way back from Nikolski, I believe. Anyway, the plane wouldn't stay airborne with one engine running and the other prop unfeathered. The ground was snow covered, and he landed on the belly.

They flew a replacement engine and crew out there with a Seaairmotive Turbo Beaver on skis from Cold Bay and replaced the engine, then flew the thing off the belly on the tundra.

I looked at the hull when they got it back to CDB and it just was missing some paint.

Tough old airplanes.

Re: Goose on Ice

I would guess that without Zane's help this link will not work, but the Goose is out.

x2 Thanks for sharing!

What an awesome plane. There is a cool die-cast model available in Alaska colors here. May have to settle for that version for a while :(
