Got My Cat Home & Pics.

Hello Backcountry Pilots,
Got my 1966 Cat 955H tracked loader delivered to my property this weekend. It ran great and I got a hell of a lot of work done on my airstrip. The 4 in 1 bucket works great for brush and moving smaller trees. After I dig them out I'm able to knock down 70 foot cottonwoods with the crawler.

I can't give that cottonwood away. It makes lousy lumber, and even worse firewood. I did call Potlatch Corp. in Lewiston, Idaho to see if they would be interested. There is about five loads for wood pulp for paper and they were not interested. Its kind of a waste, but it looks like I'll have to burn it.

Glad you peresvered. Thats a lot better than the JD. I thought that you might need grousers to push those trees but you found a better tactic.
Now I need to reclaim my strip from the tall brush. My dozer will do it but would do it better with a brush rake on it.
Have fun.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Chance

Hey Chance,
This crawler has dozer tracks & grousers instead of the pavment tracks found on most loaders. Cutting side-hill roads without a six-way blade will be a challenge. Working the flats on the airstip it works great. Some of those cottonwood's rootballs are huge. Got a line on a dump-truck for $800 too.

If we could move big iron around like airplanes we might get a group owned blade.
James be careful with that loader on sidehills, we are probably 800 miles apart otherwise we could trade machines for a month or so.
I thought a straight dozer was ok to build a road on a sidehill until I got a 6 way. Never go back.

Is there a timber minded scout troop in your area? That wood could be put to good use by them for pioneering projects. I think a lot of troops have got away from that kind of stuff unfortunately, but my experience with them is all east of the mississippi. Maybe out west the kids still have fun roping logs together. Work with them to get it hauled off to one of their backcountry sites, or perhaps ask to have them build you some cool towers and bridges on your own property.
