You might look into the high flow lifters I was talking about and make sure you have them.

Steve Knopp (Pponk) is based at Camano Island airport not far from where I live. He is a nice guy, has a very sanitary engine-building shop, and has done a fine overhaul job for several local pilots I know--some stock 470's, some "+50" aka carbeurated 520's. Unless you've got a local overhaul shop you already know & trust, you might consider shipping your engine to him for the conversion.

Be careful if you got an R crank it'll have to be changed make sure that's in ur " ". R's only have 2 counter weights on them and for a 3 blade they require a 4 wt crank.

What is the cost for the crank replacement? I'm guessing this upgrade is for all non-"U" model O470's? Or is it just for R's? His website also indicates his STC is only for H model 182's through R's.....Anyone doing field approvals on the earlier models? Seems strange that the STC would be good for all 180's, but not the 1959 182B. I understood that the 182B and 180 in 1959 were as close in design of any.

Looking at a 182B with an engine past TBO and just trying to run some numbers....

The crank for an O470 K and L have 2 sets of counterweights so I'm pretty sure will work.

That is correct. My core was a 'J' so neither my crank nor carb was applicable. I paid a $2K dissimilar core fee, which was alot better than selling my timed out 'J' and buying a suitable core.

Another nice thing about going 'directly to the source' ... I would guess that Steve knows Pponks and has installed them in as many different configs as anyone out there... After all they are his baby...
Steve will not suggest he can get an F.A. without being 100% sure of it. In my case he first checked on, and then secured an F.A. for using a prop that was not on the O-470-50 STC. If he says he can get you a particular F.A. you can take it to the bank. I would how ever recommend verifying that particular piece immediately prior to the work, as F.A. approvals seem to be very fluid nowadays...

Take care, Rob

Re: Got Pponked

The feds in so cal are different than the feds farther north. Not all mechanics are treated the same by the same fed. In 2001 we tried to get a FA for a 206 fork in nor cal. No joy. Went to Idaho and it was no sweat. In 2008 with another 182B we tried the same thing. Got the FA in nor cal cus the mechanic had a better relationship with the same fed that turned it down in 2001. He used the force.

I think Steve has the force.

Don't know exactly, My builder was behind the power curve and didn't have the right rods for my crank when he started to build and didn't think he could get them. So he found a NEW O-470U crank HE bought it for $5200 and got $1500 for mine he absorbed the loss.

That sounds like a good deal. My K crank that is undersize cost $3000 back in 1995 from Air Support International. Aircraft Specialties did the work. I still remember the guy saying he'd rather have a round undersize than a standard egg shape.

Last I heard airport is still closed, don't know where the water is. Bunch a planes on the east end of the airport and some on a vacant lot off of Smith St. outside of the airport. I'll cruse by sometime this weekend and see.

Looking at an old LA terminal chart, it looks ike Corona airport is in the flood plain and/or swampland above Prado Dam? Not surprised there'd be flooding there. Does it affect the airport often?
Haven't heard anything about it so I figure no news is good news, but did the recent rains & flooding carve any more chunks off Santa Paula airport?

Re: Got Pponked

Planes are back on airport property, water is down below fuel pumps (mid airport). The west end hangers are still below water don't know how much. They're letting people back onto the airport but have security screening, I didn't ask but I think you must be a tenant or have business to get onto. This happens every 2-3 years or so when it rains heavy, Prado dam regulates the water flow into the Santa Ana Cyn and Corps of Engineers raised the dam 30' recently but it floods the airport even before they raised the dam.

I am sure that the insurance companies give special treatment to folks with planes in Corona.

Re: Got Pponked

GUys, new to the forum but thought I'd put my two cents in. I bought a 1954 180 a couple of years ago with the Pponk STC already in it. It was an early conversion on a crappy overhaul. Engine had been pulled out of a 210 with 600 or so hours and converted. At about 780 hours compressions started taking a dump. Cylinders were chromed and shot. I went to Corona Cylinder, who is an authorized Pponk builder. He did the engine for a great price and the workmanship is great. Engine is smooth, and a beast. During break in at 25 square, I was getting 170 mph at 2500 msl. I have the original 80" Mc Cauley 3 blade off the 210. Corona Engine ported and flowed the heads and the crank balance was about as perfect as you can get. I really recommend them.
