Got Some Insurance Quotes

Thought I'd share the ballpark figures I got from my agent. I'm 300TT with 296TW with zero time in any of the planes I got quotes for. 50k hull value for each plane.

182B: 1000$/yr
1958 C180: 1700$/yr
M4: 2650$yr
M5: 2650$yr

Was thinking the Maule would fit my mission best, too bad the rate is so much more. Also I wanted to run mogas so that pretty much rules out the m4 which I think is the best looking Maule.

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

I'm surprised the Maules are 55% higher than a Cessna 180. My vote is 182B.

And would you other guys quit wrapping those Maules around the pine tree's!

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

I will also share my quotes w/ you as a comparison;

I have a Commercial, Inst., Multi and 1300TT

1.) C-182B, Hull Value $70k- $803/year (I have 300 hrs in type).

2.) C-180, Hull Value $124k- $1865/year ( I have 10 hrs total TW time). Interesting..... I really thought it was going to be twice that

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

I called AVEMCO and got a quote on 180 with 0TW time, but must get 10 dual min and was given a quote of $1700/yr.

182A was just north of $800/yr.

This was 3-4 months ago.

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

My 182E has 65k hull, +250 hrs in model, hangar, $670 (down from ~$750 last year).

I think the instrument rating saves people ~$300, and I was told that 50 hours in type and 50 hrs in past 12 months were savings points. So maybe you would just have one expensive year, and get an instrument rating, you'd pay for it eventually. Or not.

The 172 quote I got was higher than what I'm paying for the 182. Good luck!

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

I had Avemco 25 years ago with the Pacer. Cost me 180. Way less than car insurance as a teen. Now, they are the most expensive I asked. Dunno.

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

Living in Maine 2+ years ago I was paying just under $1000 for my PA-22/20-150 (tailwheel conversion TriPacer with the O320) with AVEMCO. I move to Florida and they immediately increase it to $1800. I argued, they wouldn't budge.

So I check with EAA and they get me an equivalent policy through Falcon for $1000.

When I called AVEMCO to re-argue their price, they told me that their policy was superior. I asked in what way, they couldn't answer. I will concede that AVEMCO was nice to deal with because there was no middleman broker, but that isn't worth 80% higher premiums, especially since the EAA people were very responsive.

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

It has been my experience that it is VERY hard to compare two insurance policies, truly apples to apples.

I've had good rates with AVEMCO, and yes shopped others.

Frankly, there are almost too many variables to fairly compare one person/airplane's rates with another.

Shop AVEMCO and a brokerage. Pick what makes the most sense for YOU, which may not be the cheapest.....

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

I've been happy with
Gustafson Insurance
503-266-2216

For $180K hull my insurance was originally north of $4k in 2006. This last year for $120K hull, it's $1700 and I'm now about 900 hours in my plane.

Avemco has never come close; other factors to consider are Maule parts are generally much cheaper but every mod is available for Cessnas.

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

I was with AIG when my engine came apart 8 years ago. Their premium when I bought the airplane a month earlier was around $1400/year, but they would only go to $35,000 on the hull coverage due to the age of the airplane (63 P172D). They became a total pain to deal with after the off-field landing--plus they took some 3 months to compensate the folks who retrieved the airplane and my IA who did the minor repairs to the wheel pants, which had cracked from the vibration in the field. Then we had a series of hangar thefts, and the thief stole my oxygen set. Having to jump through AIG's hoops to replace that was another pain. Then after the new engine and all of the updates were done, I asked them about increasing the hull coverage commensurately, and they refused. The coup de grace occurred when the bill for the next year's premium came, and it was jacked up a couple hundred bucks.

So I started shopping. I've read what the rest of the thread says, but the best deal I found was with Avemco--$1400/year for better liability coverage than AIG's plus $75,000 hull coverage. It's gone down each year since, plus I get a 10% discount due to regular training (Wings and IPCs, primarily).

I haven't compared other policies recently.

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

Hmm...I had *no* idea folks were paying so much for insurance. I just checked my policy...it seems reasonable. What do I need to be looking for? Why is mine so much lower? I'm no ATP or grizzled veteran. I know the 182 has better rates than some options, but 2X+ ???

I don't want to have token insurance that won't help as much as I thought if something happens.

I use Aviation Underwriters out of Van Nuys...carrier changes every year, but rates are low. What am I missing here?

$1400 for a $75K Hawk is high. I pay that same $1400 on my Bonanza. No instrument rating and 700ish in type, $100K hull.

If the coverage is indeed the same, I'd go with the low quote. it's kind of a crap shoot-- there's no hard & fast rules on who is,loower. This time Avemco, nect time a broker. And sometimes different brokers come up with better deals than others. I usually call around at least every couple years. On the other hand, I've been with the same outfit forever for my car & home insurance, and haven't even bothered gettng competitive quotes in probably over 20 years. Go figure.
FWIW I've got full coverage on my C150/150TD: $36K hull value, with 2500 hours & 2200 hours TW, for $783 a year through Regal. I think the underwriter is or at least was Old Republic.

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

When I bought my plane in order to get my pilot's license, I was horrified to get quotes of $2400/ yr for liability and $25K hull coverage for an old 172 (and zero time pilot). Then I found out I could get liability coverage plus $25K hull coverage for "ground not in motion". It initially cost me about $600/yr and has drifted down and seems to have bottomed out at around $377/yr for the last two years. At the time, EAA/Falcon was the cheapest, and I've stayed with them.

So, I'm covered if I screw up and get sued. I'm covered (on the ground) for wind damage, hail damage, fire, theft, etc. If I crash and survive, I will have to eat the loss, so hopefully that will be one more incentive to make good decisions. If I crash and die, well, I likely won't care.

"Ground not in motion" might not be an option for everyone, but it's well worth knowing about. For a low-time pilot in a cheap airplane, it's got some compelling advantages.

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

My insurance is due in September. Got a quote done. Allianz came in lowest at $1435 for 60K full flight and ground risk. 250TT, 150TT in my Citabria.
Deductibles can make quite a difference in cost, mine is $50), but if I knock it down to 250 price goes up noticeably.

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

These all sound FANTASTICALLY cheap to me, lads...
If you want a shock, try getting a quote for hull in motion + liability for an experiemental tail dragger which you (obviously) have no time in (as you're building it!). That is if they'll even quote at all.

It's enough to make your eyes water!

Re: Got Some Insurance Quotes

Chartis Aerospace Insurance (National Union Fire-Pittsburgh)
$3358
Experimental Dream Aircraft Tundra. 140,000 hull. (I based it on sale value history) All risks covered in Motion or Not. Landing on airport or off. All perils. All of North America. No deductible. 1,000,000 Bodily injury and property damage/Ocurrence. 100,000 Passenger bodily injury/person.

This is the only policy I have ever owned. I did not buy insurance until after the 40 hr test flight was over, somewhere around 70 hrs I think. The test period time will be the hardest and most expensive coverage to get. Per thousand of coverage AFTER the test period it is cheaper than many certified aircraft and certainly no higher considering there is no restrictions for where it is landed. I was grandfathered in for taildraggers. Other than the 70 hrs on the Tundra, I had about 3 hrs of taildragger time in the last 20 yrs.

If you really enjoy building, then just insure it for what you have in to your Bearhawk and don't worry about insuring for market value. I know that it would drop the hull value on mine considerably.

I too use Scott Gustafson, we are both from Oregon and fly Maules. I like to support local business as much as possible. My 2000 Maule M7 with full coverage 115K is $1869 I have 1180 hours in the Maule and my instrument rating.

When I bought the Maule I had zero TW time and 110 hr in 152s 172s Avemco was the only company who would touch me. $5000 deductible and $6500 premium on $135K I had to do it, couldn't afford not to.

Knock on wood I have never needed it.
