Got to the beach at last!

I skipped work for the day and went to the east coast of New Zealand with a mate in a Cub. My first beach landings, the sand was firm and seemed easy to read. We had an absolute blast and landed on half a dozen different beaches, shortest was about 200 meters with a real neat curved approach dropping over a cliff. Most were kilometers long so I might take my 172 over when I get a chance..

Cool - thanks for the report 150, looks like it was a hazy old day but good firm sands!

You must be just south of Blackhead somewhere I guess? I don't recognise the area though.

North and south of Castle Point.. The day was crystal clear, that's my dirty windows and salt spray!

We met a couple old guy's driving up the beach and they gave us a dozen abalone (paua for you kiwis) and we took them for a fly, made their day!

Beautiful, I've had 6 weeks of rain here over 20 inches so it's nice to see some blue southern sky.

Re: Got to the beach at last!

There's a strip at Flat Point just east of Martinborough and right on the beach, I took my guy's over there for our christmas do and we chucked some pots in right off the end of the strip and got a few legal crays. Nice reef there too for snorkeling crays and paua

Very nice! Thanks! We don't get to see too many pics from around the globe. I do appreciate it.

Hello,
New Zealand is on my bucket list. Red stag hunting and whitewater helicopter kayaking sound good to me.

I went to NZ in 05.
I spent 3weeks over there, both on the north island and south.
Very nice place.
They do it correct, you need a job BEFORE moving to the country,or
that is my understanding.
Don't wait to go there,it is well worth the tsa b.s

New Zealand has strict immigration requirements, they don't let any Dick, Abdul or Pedro in there, even if they do have money. Also stay out of the water. I hear the sharks are hungry. Or this could be a Border officials dealing with an illegal Alien.

Re: Got to the beach at last!

I've been here almost 5 years, it's a great country and everything is so accessible. Within 100nm radius were I live we have fly fishing, beach fishing, reef fishing, diving, deer and pig hunting, hiking, white water rafting, 3 snow fields with world class skiing or snowboarding, motocross, speedway, Manfield Park Raceway for cars and bikes and fantastic flying with dozens of strips! Less than a mile from our airstrip is a little river chock full of rainbow and the occasional brown trout...

It's a neat country alright! When you guy's come over look me up and we'll do some flying, maybe even chuck a few pots in iceman!

A few more pics, North and South islands....

Re: Got to the beach at last!

Great pictures! We went there in December. I flew in a tiger moth in Wanaka, nice flight, but way too short.
It is a great country. My wife is already planning a return trip for the 2014 airshow.

Re: Got to the beach at last!

Not yet but definitely on my list, I fly over it often on the way to Nelson, maybe camp there for a couple days, apparently good fishing.. The Boyd airstrip is next. Where are you?

Re: Got to the beach at last!

Yeah you're right - the fishing is good - you can land on the beach too if you time the tides right, otherwise it's a short walk from the airstrip. Good diving as well.

I'm finishing off the Bearhawk in Wellington, then moving it to the Flying Doctor hanger in Palmy North in a few months time. We're hoping to receive a test flying area which includes Fielding amongst others, Otaki etc. so we'll see you around for sure!
